Oh no don't get me wrong when doing my own thing I don't mind working longer hours because I am personally invested and getting out what I put in.

But right now I'd like to get off the 18h days and 24/7/365 always available trip and settle down into a regular 9-5 closer to home.

You see I don't need more money. I'm quite happy with what we earn as a household and our lifestyle is perfectly adequate.

I just want to work less for the same money so I can spend more time at home with my family. Doing a degree I don't think will make that happen and instead just see me working harder for the next few years at least losing out on the precious time I wanted in the first place.

Working from home or for myself changed that dynamic drastically.

Doing a degree will give you opportunities you did not have before. It will give you easier access should you decide to leave SA (like i am). It will make you less likely to become redundant later in life as you gain the experience with the associated education. You don't need the money now, but wait till the government starts enforcing us to fork out an extra 3k a month for NHI for the disadvantaged. You planned for that as well?

Yes, planning agreed. Wait till you start paying the heavy school fees and everything else. Then your 40K goal post is going to move very higher. You can disagree all you want, I see it on a daily basis.

Already compensated for that.

My house is paid for in four years so I will have that disposable income.

At the same time I'm already investing heavily now to not have those school fees and other costs come out of my pocket then but instead come out of my pocket now and essentially be "free" later.

Obviously not everything always goes according to plan and I'm sure we'll want a bigger house at some point in the next few years but if nothing goes horribly wrong we'll be living a happy life with a lifestyle we are comfortable with.

While i agree with your sentiment, its also a feeble excuse. I am able to study and give my SO tons of attention. Its about time management. The time when you watching sport, or having a drink with friends could be easily allocated to the books.

Well you've planned well, but I'm afraid in this uncertain South Africa economic climate, I am sure people are going to be in store for some unpleasant surprises.

How old are you?

I'm not quite ready to flee the country yet but in that regard I'm lucky that my skills in my current position are quite rare and sought after and therefore if I really wanted to go I would have a few options.

To be honest though I've never been great at book learning and to squeeze that in on top of working and raising a child I think would simply amount to daily suffering for me that isn't worth it.

Then I would rather risk starting my own business and making my own money like that.

Nah it's not an excuse, it's a decision.

It's just acceptance of who and what I am and what's more important to me.

Anyway good chat, let me get on with my day before we start going in circles.

Probably depends heavily on field of study. If you reach the age of 30 and you are only earning 20k in the software industry you are failing hard and your boss is really screwing you over (unless you live in PE :p )

You'd be surprised what some ppl earn in PE.

I was referring to 30 with roughly 10 years experience.

Oh, should maybe not have quoted the first line then.

Still, how the hell do people get jobs without studying? It's hard enough if you have a degree in a decent field, I can't imagine how hard it would be with just matric. Unless you want to go break rocks for R12 500/month.

Some people are naturally talented in the field.

I studied, don't get me wrong.
I just never finished.
I worked my way up in this field and showed natural ability to do the job faster and more proficiently than my counterparts.
I started at the bottom now I'm here ;)

Some people are naturally talented in the field.

Which field?

Sure, some might be talented, even geniuses, but even getting a damn interview takes a degree plus experience. Unless you know someone. Scratch that, even if you do know someone.

Also, most fields where you do make decent money, you really do need a degree. Fancy going for surgery and the doctor tells you "I don't have a degree, but don't worry I'm naturally talented?"

How about before driving over a bridge someone tells you "don't worry brah, the engineers who designed this have never studied a day in their lives, but I hear they're pretty talented so it's all good".

Well software development is easier than neuro surgery:p
