For those with an Android device who may be interested in using that device as a modem, EasyTether works like a charm with Debian Squeeze (no rooting of the Android device required). The lite version is pretty useless as it blocks https. The pro version costs $10 and is very useful for using up those leftover end of month megs...

Unfortunately, only .deb and .rpm Linux drivers available:

Isn't personal hotspot a standard feature on Android? That seems like a better way without spending money (unless you don't have wireless in your computer)?

Standard hotspot is only available with 2.2 upwards.

Must add, if I think how much effort it took to get my Vodafone modem working a couple of years back, this was an absolute piece of cake. All you have to do is start the EasyTether software from the CLI.

From what I've read, wireless hotspot chews up the battery. As easytether works via USB, you're charging the battery while you're using the device as a modem.

Sorry about the hijack but is there a thethering option for blackberry? I got a data bundle on my blackberry want to use it as a modem?

I always get a warm feeling about software when the developers make the effort to respond to a query. I asked about the availability of the BB app:

Hello, al.

It is almost ready, though we are bound by some platform restrictions.

This within ½hr of my posting the query.

ok thanks, but will it be for 64bit also, I tried linberry a while back was only for 32bit :?
