I'm installing Edubuntu 9.10 on a computer (don't laugh, the PC is old and slow - newer versions doesn't run that smoothly) but I cannot install new applications in the Software center. It says that "it is not available in current data". I have tried to run "sudo apt-get update", but this doesn't help.

I'm a Linux beginner.

Can someone help or am I out of luck to install something from the Software center on this old distro?

Install Lubuntu (latest) and simply add the applications bundled with Edubuntu by using apt-get.

Hope it works!

Oh, so you don't have faith in your own advice ..... I'm cancelling the download.

Just kidding!!!!

It should be finished by now at work. It was only a 700MB download. I'll check tomorrow.

Should work perfectly. Edubuntu is just Ubuntu with some pre-bundled packages. Since your PC is old, Lubuntu is a lightweight version of Ubuntu (I prefer Lubuntu and Xubuntu anyway) so it'll run just fine and you'll have all the benefits of the latest security updates and features. Then you just need to augment it with the Edubuntu packages.
