2 assault charges laid against EFF MP after SONA klap

Two plain clothes police officers have opened cases of assault against members of the EFF following an altercation after the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Thursday night.

Video footage emerged on Friday showing EFF MP Marshall Dlamini slapping a plain clothes police officer.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo confirmed to News24 that two charges of assault have been laid by a female sergeant and a male warrant officer respectively.

He added that police are currently investigating the matters and will then send the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions for decision on whether or not to prosecute.

Sure ... and the video does not accord with the events:
According to the statement, Malema and the EFF leadership were "unreasonably stopped by the white shirts" in Parliament after the House had been adjourned. They ostensibly thought "this was the moment and reacted with the necessary self-defence".

"The event of a white security man in black and white, being pushed and clapped [sic] in the face, followed him violently pulling the CIC Malema, from passing through the corridor doors of the National Assembly."

There was no aggression by the white shirts, only trying to stop them. Then the slap, followed by red overalls making U-turns and existing post haste like cowards.

Bullshit story if I ever heard one and comparing it to the video. I do believe adding a false statement and perjury can be added to the charges.

Record incident, log a reckless endangerment case with SAPS.. criminal case, hard evidence, courts want to make an example.. that oke will die in SA as none of 1st world countries I know take road offenses like this lightly let alone a criminal offense.

Majority of the morons on the road that do this want to be able to travel btw. The others couldn’t care less but they will have a criminal record now which will need to be explained at every job interview
 
EFF MP Dlamini comments on parliament slap: ‘We sorted him out’

He additionally blames the ANC for the death of a student at the Durban University of Technology.

EFF MP Marshall Dlamini, the man who made headlines after the president’s state of the nation address when he slapped an officer, has commented on his actions with no sign of remorse.

Dlamini shot to notoriety after a video showing him slapping officer Johan Carstens outside parliament trended on social media.

On Tuesday, the MP was at the memorial of Mlungisi Madonsela, the student who died during protest action at the Durban University of Technology’s Steve Biko campus last week. Madonsela died in hospital, allegedly shot by a security guard.

A report by TimesLive quotes Dlamani saying: “Some racist clown got overzealous in parliament and we sorted him out. We will never apologise to or succumb to racists.

“Let me tell you now, there is no one who is going to dictate to us how we should conduct our revolution because those that we trusted betrayed us. Those that we trusted lied to us. Those that we trusted sold us out. So we are not going to be told by anyone.”

So it's now a revolution to attack somebody doing his job - security? Since it's a revolution now, can we apply the relevant laws for treason? Hell, I'd even sponsor the needed soap to turn that red overall to orange after a 6hr soak - save some tax money. And while the EFF have an aversion to security, left get rid of Juliarse's government sponsored body guards we're paying for.
 
EFF MP charged with Sona slap has case postponed until June

An assault case against EFF MP Marshall Dlamini was postponed until June 5 in the Cape Town magistrate's court on Tuesday.

The MP's counsel indicated that they would like the case to be heard after the general election.Dlamini was filmed slapping a plain-clothes police officer at parliament after the state of the Nation address (Sona) in February.
Charges of assault were laid by a male warrant officer and a female sergeant, said police spokesperson Brig Vishnu Naidoo.

The EFF claimed the scuffle was in response to a death threat against party leader Julius Malema.

EFF MP Marshall Dlamini's assault case was postponed in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, until next year.

National Prosecuting Authority Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the trial would continue when it returned to court on 28 and 29 March.

Dlamini is the secretary-general of the EFF.

The alleged assault on Johan Carstens came during a pre-pandemic State of the Nation Address (SONA) in February 2019.

The alleged assault occurred shortly after the adjournment of the joint sitting for the SONA, outside the National Assembly, as the procession, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and the presiding officers, left the House.

Parliament 'slap' left policeman with 3cm gash on nose, doctor testifies

The policeman who was slapped after the 2019 State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament sustained a 3cm wound on the bridge of his nose and redness in one cheek, a doctor testified in the assault trial of EFF secretary-general Marshall Dlamini on Tuesday.

"He said he was smacked across the face," Dr Lynne Swarts told the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.


Swarts testified that the policeman, Warrant Officer Johan Carstens, had blood on the bridge of his nose and his cheek and collar when she saw him.

She noted the deep abrasion on the bridge of his nose and redness around his right eye.

At the time, Carstens said a member of Parliament had slapped him, moving his glasses across the bridge of his nose. His eye also hurt.

She explained that Carstens was given the routine "AVPU" test, which categorises the state of a patient.

He was listed as an "A" for alert, on a scale that includes V for only responding to verbal communication, P if only responding to pain, and U for unresponsive. Dlamini listened intently from a far corner of the small court room.
