So, the new year rolls around and I'm all excited to hop on over to a Telkom store and pick up a 10GB Internet 5 Promo from 8ta. This morning I log on to the 8ta website to see what I need to take along and get this
What paperwork is required to sign up at a store?
A: Please bring your latest payslip, proof of identification (ID or Passport), proof of residence and 3 months bank statements.

I dutifully print out my latest payslip, proof of residence and bank statements and drive on over to the Telkom store in Hatfield. I arrive and have to wait ages, not because the shop is so busy, but because there is only one 8ta consultant and he's busy with a client. After waiting more than 15 minutes (I only have 45 min lunch in total) I ask if there isn't somebody else I can speak to but apparently not - they're on lunch. I mean, seriously, who in retail has their workers go out on lunch during lunch hour? Surely you have all hands on deck during the busiest time of the day...

Anyway, eventually the consultant finishes with the customer and my turn comes around. I tell him I'd like to subscribe to the Internet 5 Promo and hand him the stack of documents. He takes a look at the documents and duly informs me he is unable to assist me because they don't accept internet bank statements (they must have a bank stamp) or certified copies of ID docs, only original. Neither will my drivers license serve as identification. So, I leave the Telkom store without my 8ta subscription despite my very best efforts to sign up.

8ta, you can have all the great packages you want but if you want me (and others like me) to sign up, you're going to have to lift our game here. Sorry, but it's true!

This is common practice FYI

No one should accept internet banking statements... they need to be stamped by the branch.

Sucks but IB statements are worthless.

Fair enough - but then say so on the website surely?

I assume this is for RICA? If that's the case, I bought the 2GB + 1GB promo and all I had was my ID and levy statement and everyone was happy. But then there wasn't signal...:erm:

So I phone 081 125 *hoping* for a better experience. Been on hold for a couple of minutes already. Maybe the on-hold message should say something along the lines of "You're call is important to us. Please hold until it is no longer important to you."

So, after about 6 minutes on hold the call gets dropped...

EDIT: I filled in the little online "contact me" form. Maybe I'll have more joy this way... Plus I'm on hold again on 081 125.

I filled in that "contact me " form about 3 months ago..... The End! Not even a confrirmation email ... nothing!

I signed up with the call centre. Didnt need to supply any documentation except the ones required for RICA.

How did you get them to answer? I've tried twice already - cut off after 6 mins first time. Took the option to leave a message after 5 mins the second time.

I wanted to take out a contract with CellC recently, got my ID, Payslip (which I printed as we use VIP ESS at work and dont get given pay slips) and printed out my bank statements that were emailed to me. Went to Cell C, they looked at my statements and told me they wont accept them, I needed statements from inside the bank. Firstly, I don't have time to go to a bank during office hours and secondly banks CHARGE you for the privilage of getting them to print and stamp statements for you. I argued a little with the rep (in a friendly way), he called his area manager who refused (also cliamed nobody accepts printed statements without a stamp). I thanked the rep (not his fault and he tried), took mys stuff and literally walked 10 paces to the MTN service centre next door (Centurion Mall). Gave them the exact same statements with ID, PS, proof of residence and they smiled and gave me the phone and sim within 30min. They were more than happy to take my money.

Personally, think it's total BS that they want stamped statements, last time I got stamped statements from ABSA it cost me R32 each which is madness. If all the info and documents check out then whats the problem? And I have since confirmed, even the MTN stores will take internet statements as they are so common theses days, just like home printed payslips are.

Ok, so now that I've vented my frustration and calmed down a bit I'm left with one question - how on earth do I subscribe to this now?

1. Go to the bank at Hatfield and get 3 months statements and let them stamp it. Absa do it for free.
2. Take your ID copy (no need) and your ID. They will copy it in store.
3. Take your payslip.
4. Take your proof of residence.
5. Fill in 1/2 pge of contract.

Whala.

15 minutes you walk out with your sim. Immediatly activated.

You will be be pleasantly surprised.

If you want a reaction...get hold of a consumer watch website like "hellopeter" You will definitely get a reaction...It is all that I use for bad service delivery in South Africa....Which is putrid to say the least....!!!

And you'll end up being the laughing stock... If you want to take out any contract there is legislation that dictates what is required. That some retailers do not follow the correct process does not mean that those retailers who abide by the rules are being petty. Do yourself a favour and read up on the National Credit Act [2005] and RICA [2002].

Yes, if they accept a printed out copy of your bank statements and a non-certified copy of your ID they are actually taking a huge risk.

The other day I got a voda sim and the guy said I didn't look like a criminal so he didn't RICA me... WTF.

They wouldn't even accept a certified copy.

I went back again today, mentally prepared for the slow service. After a longish wait I was helped by a very friendly sales guy. While he was filling out the pile of paperwork I had plenty time to wade through all the promotional material lying around. I noticed that one can get a free E173 modem on the Internet 5 Promo if you register as a business user, so I told the helpful sales guy I want to be a business guy. He said no problem, requested one additional document and pronto! So here I am surfing along merrily on my new E173 8ta modem.
