The block tariffs are a major concern - it hits the middle class the hardest.
The rich can afford more expensive tariffs, the poor get subsidised and the middle class have to cough up.

When one runs is already running energy savers, doesn't run heating or cooling systems (underfloor heating or aircon) and has a solar water heater what else can one do to save electricity?
Sit in the dark at night and only shower once per week?

um? Then you are in 1 of 2 places. Either your contract simply covers electricity, in which case you will get a rude surprise come increase time. The owner will have to cover the inflationary increase and the electricity increase all in one shot, so expect a good 10-15% increase on your rental costs. Unless s/he is a really nice person and doesn't mind putting themselves out of coin to cover the losses. In which case never, ever move, unless you are purchasing property.

The other situation is that your rent is a debit order that goes off your account. The managing agents will calulate the cost of your rent (Fixed) and add your electricity bill to your rental and deduct it accordingly. In which case you will experience an instant increase in your rental charges as your electricity cost goes up.

Either way, you pay for it. Unless you have the most awesome landlord ever.

Hi,

I dont have managing agents or any of that rubbish thanks. No rate changes expected with my landlord. Loving where I live and have no intention of moving. I guess I have an orsm landlord then :D

What can we do, moaning solves nothing and even actively fighting it solves nothing. Literally can just chug it down like a fool.

I just wanna see what happens after the "Investments" are completed. Once Medupi/Kusile stands, what will happen with the prices. Will we then see our prices drop back by 30% for 3 years in a row?

And I also heard on 702 that the price hikes were being scrapped due to a loan being approved. So much for that golden lining?

I've read of guys replacing there lights with solar lights :p

I need facts not anecdotal evidence. No offense but you have an incredibly strong right wing bias, so I need the facts. Got a link to substantiate what you say?

Looks like we being paying more than the US & Canada for a while...

Geez, at least we dont live in Denmark or Germany! ouch. We would need a 300% increase to have their pricing :eek:

I will try to get the thread where our prices were compared.
There were also the thing about it not being only 75% increase. The municipality will put their price ontop of that. They say that 25% yearly, has asked more 3 more years.

Something like:
25% on R100 = R125
25% on R125 = R 156.25
25% on R195 = R 195.25

I just though you would remember as I'm sure you were here.

Don't have facts but speaking to a few of my European and Chinese colleagues recently and they were all shocked at the cost of our electricity and broadband.
This was based on what i pay for 4Meg uncapped from MWeb and monthly electricity costs for my two bedroom flat in Jhb.

The way you post in the CA section I always assumed you were like a female version of marine1. Might have gotten it wrong, I dont spend as much time in the CA section as others.

Our broadband has always being over priced. The previous government didnt go out of its way to enable communications for the public, and the current government are corrupt and useless. Telkom are raping South Africans. At one state we had the most expensive in the world!

Actually I'm pleasantly suprised by the list. The less developed you are the more electricity should cost to produce. Shows how much we were underpaying for years. The U.S.A or Canada didn't have to find the money to put an extra 120% of people on the grid. They're also huge in natural resources and use nuclear power. They don't also have to subsidise the poor with a set amoutn of free power. All than considered and we pay almost the same as them.

Actually considering that the 1st world has far more, lights, bilboards, shopping centres, middle class housing, appliances per house, appliances per capita, cities, traffic lights etc.... You would expect their electricity consumption and thus their cost to be higher than a developing nation that has far less of all of the above. Subsidising the poor is a pretty small amount of power really, considering that they have maybe a stove and a light in their houses, if their lucky.

But we earn far less than they do.
The average annual household income in the USA was about R315 000 in 2008.
The average annual household income in South African was estimated at R74 589 in 2006 by Stats SA.
