Electricity up another 25.8% from Friday

This is not the last of it, water's the next to go and will require huge investments to get up to scratch. Get ready for the new, more expensive SA.

I am out spoken about not liking the ANC Corruption ( in all parties ) and the fact that I think the ANC is a lazy bunch of retards.


I will post threads as I find them. Remember that Canada and UK has alternatives to "eskom" they cook on gas and heating is not done only by buring cole.
 
There are currently many ways to ameliorate the problem of electricity price increases.

From simply moving to cfl lighting and getting a solar geyser to more advanced stuff like purchasing a high efficiency fridge. If you take energy consumption into account in your daily life you will be surprised how much less power you can use in comparison to your previous consumption.

The trade off of course is that these new products will cost money to replace. Still it is the only alternative to changing your lifestyle.

I spent months, back when we had load shedding, researching the off grid community and it is very possible to adopt a lot of their ideas without sacrificing quality of life.

I still find it fascinating that there are some people who will buy a 200k car but consider spending 20k on a solar geyser a waste of money.

You know the costs will stay high, just like food after a petrol increase regardless of the oil price and petrol price subsequently coming down.

I think if you compared the middle class we don't earn that badly compared to the U.S.A. But that's comparing the world 30st biggest economy with the biggest so hardly apples and apples. I think you will find countires earning far less per capita (like our Brics pals) who also pay the same or more as we do. So it's all relative.

Yes but our middle class is paying for our lower class. So you cannot compare them in isolation in this case. The other things that you must remember are:
1) The ANC prevented Eskom from building more power stations when they still had the means to do it without charging us this much more.
2) Many things in our country were developing in 1994 and still are, back in 1994, our power grid was not in a developing state at all. It was entirely developed. Plus we have our own coal reserves to burn.

Considering those things, the cost of electricity should not have needed to get to this point. If the ANC had allowed Eskom to build new power stations when they wanted to, we would be paying more for sure, but not the current projected figures.

I think the biggest outcry is still about us giving Zimbabwe free electricity and the Big Iron meters paying a minimum.

Can we apply the logic of supply and demand to a non renewable energy?

Um contradict yourself much? You are always the first to jump up in arms about the bad things that the apartheid era did. Focusing on the past seems to be one of your big kickstands. The difference is, the past that I am focusing on, is still present today... the A...N...C.
Also, I stated that the increases would have happened back then as well. But they would have been much lower than todays (In principle, corruption not-withstanding). That is because they would have only needed to cater for their expansion in the increases, and not the failed turbines and substations due to lack of maintenance and skills. Hopefully those power stations having been built back then would have actually provided the ideal training ground to up the black skill force, as they would have needed to use contractors to assist them in installing new stations. These contractors would have passed their knowledge onto many of the black technicians. Theoretically this would have helped to ensure that the future maintenance of those new powerstations, combined with the maintenance of the older ones; all would have been done better.

See the shortsightedness? All this is happening now, while the current stations are falling apart, the cost of which is being inflated and handed down to us.

Johannesburg - The next round of steep electricity tariff increases that comes into force on Friday – as well as a hefty fuel price increase to be announced then – will certainly be no April Fool’s joke for millions of South African consumers.

Consumers who buy electricity directly from Eskom will pay 25.8% more for their power from Friday April 1.

At the same time the latest estimate is that the petrol price could be hiked by at least 48c/litre in April and the diesel price by at least 63c. The announcement on the fuel price adjustment, which takes effect on the first Wednesday of each month, is expected on Friday.

In the past month oil prices have climbed to around $115/barrel amid protracted political unrest in Libya and other oil-producing countries in the Middle East.

Calculations based on the latest figures from the Department of Energy indicate that on April 7 the petrol price could rise by 30c and that of diesel by 45c if the rand/dollar exchange rate and international fuel prices remain stable for the rest of the week.

But the annual fuel levy increase also comes into effect in April. The general fuel levy will be 10c/litre up and the Road Accident Fund levy 8c/litre up. This could push the price of 95-octane petrol up to R9.90/litre in Gauteng, and at the coast up to R9.66, reminding one of the steep hikes in 2008 when the oil price shot up to $147/barrel and South African fuel prices soared to more than R10/litre.

Eskom’s latest price increase is the second of three successive ones approved by the National Energy Regulator in 2009.

Consumers can expect a third big increase – 25.9% – next year.

Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe said the increase would affect just over four million consumers’ pockets.

Other consumers receive their electricity from municipalities, and their increases will be implemented only from July 1, she said.

Eskom would also charge the municipalities the higher tariff only from July 1. The difference in timing is owing to financial year-ends and legislation affecting municipalities.

She said the increases were necessary to support Eskom’s construction programme. The utility was busy with a capital expenditure programme of more than R300bn and had for three years sought electricity tariffs that were more reflective of costs.

The new increases would bring Eskom’s tariffs more in line with what they should be, she explained.

Joffe said poorer consumers were protected by the fact that increases would be based on levels of electricity consumption.

These were referred to as “rising block tariffs”, she said. The greater the amount of electricity consumed, the more a consumer would pay for it.

Who uses the Actaris electric box? Extremely expensive and you dont get free electric every month? and the meter number only works at some shops....

The definition has changed. Pre 1994 I was considered by the government to be left of centre. Now I would be considered by the government to be right of centre. All the old liberal lefties are now right wing racists.
