Your claim that Lead Acid is 'incredibly fragile' is based on what? Can you provide facts to backup your statement.

There are many studies, just look on Google.

But just run a brand new LA down to zero 10 times and see if it still works.

(See links in Post #11 above).

Your new LA could last for two weeks in the new SA.

I'm not saying that LC does not have issues, I 'm saying that they are way more robust than LA.

But it looks as if proper charging is important.

The thread referenced earlier discusses the use of LC in 4x4's. After reading up a lot last night, I get the impression that charging LC batteries at high temperature (ie above 40 C, eg in an engine compartment) causes bubbles in the sealed battery, which could make it swell and burst.

That is not what I plan to do, so I may get two of them and see how it goes. It will double the capacity of my TV setup from 2.5 to 5 hours, which is more in line with my load-shedding requirements.

The LC batteries have a 3 year guarantee.

You actually need to come back in 5 years and tell us how happy you are, unless you implying that you hooked those extra 2 a few years ago?

Ran the first 2 batteries with inverter for 4yrs. Added 2 extra in December, not sure what you trying to say or imply
 
Don't mean to hijack the thread but can anyone tell me where to find a 1200w inverter/charger like the tedelex mentioned that is IN STOCK, I have looked absolutely everywhere and cannot find them.... The places I have phoned are only getting stock in March. :(

I bought three Tedelex UPS's in 2010 on a sale, a 600w, 1200w , 2000w. I think that Tedelex were going out of the UPS business at the time, all of the above works as UPS's.

Hauled them out of the garage for the first time just the other day, and they all work fine. Just wish that the 2000w was pure sine, would like to use it on the fridge. May still get a 1500w pure sine inverter.

So not sure if you can still get the 1200w Tedelex units. Seems to be a good unit, works well on my TV.

I have done a lot of research on LC , and Im not satisfied. I will never risk forking out so much money. That's just me.

One thing you must understand is no person tries and discharge his/her battery to 100% intentionally. 9/10 times the user doesn't even know how his/her system operates. So when something goes faulty, they don't know where to point the finger at.

Coming back to my setup, I have been using a top quality LA Gel batteries for a year now. I have many blackouts in my area. The UPS manages the batteries just fine. If I had crap batteries, they would discharge quite fast and the UPS would shut down, not just because the UPS cannot supply more power but because it is protecting the battery from damage ( due to extreme discharge).

Sorry , I didn't get what you were saying. Now I do. Can you tell me what kind of batteries came with the Inverter ? I have the same 2kva but didn't open it up as yet.

In my experience with this unit, I use to have my LED TV, DSTV Decoder, and a DVD connected to it. I use to run a 5w LED now and then. I used to get about 6 hours of backup time, and this also sparingly.

Im sorry I don't really know but I know Isheed_cn always says he can organise these batteries not much higher cost than LA, and I too am waiting for him to give me some prices because I'd buy quite a few for my other family members.

My supplier is looking into sourcing these though, so as soon as I get more info, I will let you know.

Judging from the prices in the US they seem bloody expensive!
 
I haven't used a huge array of inverters but of the 3-4 models I found the square wave to have a buzz and the sine wave to be silent. Huge price difference too.

Any inverter can buzz. Buzzing is caused by transformers that vibrate. It has nothing to do with sine wave VS square wave. Transformers vibrate because you are dealing with a mechanical component (eg. turning electricity into magnetic field and back again)

It is perfectly acceptable for an inverter to buzz.
 
Bought my Tedelex Intellipower 4 in 2008 after loadshedding stopped for R2000 from Teljoy and the batteries are still working fine. Had it running a few days ago for four hours with a 43" Plam TV, computer, HD PVR, video recorder and some lights connected to it without any problems.
 
I bought an Ellies 600w power invertor a few days ago. Ive used it twice and then the battery went down to one bar and the invertor started beeping.

Im now charging it and would like to know how many hours i need to leave it on charge, for its first time.

Ellies Not A Ups

Unfortunately I cannot recommend ellies powerbox for a ups. Its 1200w. Connected to it is a 20 inch lcd screen, i5 desktop pc, 46 inch led screen & dstv decoder. I test it on the 1 feb for 5 hours and it worked fine. I turned off the earth leakage & the pc stayed on. But today the earth leakage tripped & the pc turned off & came on again. This was a very unpleasant surprise & this is already the 3rd replaced unit that Solarmax has given me.....the box cost me 9 grand.......The previous 2 were not ellies but were supplied to Solarmax from a private indvidual who they had lost contact with......

The support guy is coming on Monday.....but I don't know how he can help.....will see....

I do not recommend either Solarmax or Ellies as units to protect your computer equipment. Stick to the little 20 minute pc ups & just run like mad cap to shut down your pc in time.....that's the best you can do for now.....

Or buy a proper (preferably online) UPS with usb so that it can shutdown the computer for you.

i.e. get an online UPS with USB so it can shutdown the computer for you.
Or, just sell the desktop, and buy a laptop. Built in UPS ;)
You'll have to look to see whats available here yourself, I'm not too au fait with whats available locally unfortunately, as I don't need that sort of thing (I'm offgrid...)

NB Your 1200W / 9000rand thing is roughly R2700 on takealot for something similar with a Sine Wave inverter.

1st. The ellies inverter works 100%. I run all of the following off it, and the pc doesnt restart:
- 40" LED TV
- 5.1 Sound system for TV (includes the active subwoofer)
- 24 port gig switch
- 4x Mikrotik routers (3 of which is 27db radio dish)
- 1x Ubnt dish
- Fileserver running 12x 4TB WD hard drives
- HTPC

So I run 2 pcs on it (altho only the TV, no monitors)

2nd, That R2700 ups (LOL) is not nearly the same, it will maybe last 20-30min, the Ellies inverter lasts 8 hours for the above setup. So not a true comparison, other than the load they can carry, just not for the same length of time.
 
The R2700 one will too, add batteries to the back connector...

I keep my 4TB's housed in HP Microservers, and well fed with tv for Plex serving ;)
 
Yeah a wugger. I have seen your posts on the ctwug forums. Sad that the guy there just isnt interested in adding more people to his current highsites.

The fileserver runs ZFS, with a few KVM VMs for services :)

At R9k, I would have suggested this instead: (2400w)
Axpert 3000VA/2400W inverter @ R5965
2x 102Ah batteries R1595 each

R9200 total.

That inverter is pure sine wave, has a fast change-over time, provides a lot of information and has a lot of support online.

Any other reviews on this, especially the run time as well as any issues? It's going for R3999 at Makro and I am thinking hard about getting it. I will be running a 120W LCD TV, a 200 W hi fi, 72Wsub, dstv decoder and an ADSL modem.

Awesome price, like really, the prices came down tumbling on these. They went for closer to R6000-R7500 when I bought mine back when load shedding still happened.

As for the quality. If you run all of that, you may have some issues with this inverter. When I had a 140W LCD TV + File server 250W + AVReceiver + SUB + ADSL + HTPC and other stuff on it, the inverter would trip when the power went out, and I had to restart everything of the inverter again. Was really annoying. Was like having a generator :(

I then sold off the LCD TV and bought a LED TV which runs closer to 40-60W. Now the power can go out and everything on the inverter will keep on running without interruption. Running times for me is anything from 4-6 hours off the 2 batteries, where I only needed 2 hours for the load shedding times we had in Cape Town.

So the inverter works, I would just recommend you consider moving to a lower powered TV.
