damn, just when i thought it was time to get rid of my IS based account!
It is alway's a good idea to have both account types (backbone providers) in your arsenal.

I don't see how. They are informing us before the thing is actually down.
Correct they are informing you before it goes down or gets interupted.

Point taken.

I was just struck by the coincidence, similarity and irony of it all:

There was a furore over the time span of the repairs that affected the Seacom cable in April (approx 4 days) and how it was considered that the SAT3 cable doesn't experience such lengthy interruptions, and just half a month later they are also affected by repairs for... wait for it... approx 4 days.

Indeed!

Well I'm struck with the DODGINESS of it all...

Does this mean that my mweb uncapped wont be affected? I ask because when they were working on seacom they were almost completely down.

Destroy their reputation by telling us there will be problems and do their best to fix it.

Yikes if anything that enhances their rep in my eyes.

Mweb runs a mix of everything afaik, so probably yes but not as bad as w/ seacom.

Curious to see how WA copes with this. They are SAT3 heavy I think.

Not sure. But my pings were quite heavy with WA playing BFBC2 today. Over 900 at times and 500-600 most of the time.

You are aware that they have full redundancy via SAFE and SAT2?

(and I wonder how much they have leased via Seacom and that effective date - is it for SWC only?)

Are those cable systems still maintained and in use? Or are they now testing it to see if the sharks and whales maybe had a tug of war with those ?
Who has detailed knowledge on what capacity actually comes into SA via cable?

So we're on an IS account....when Seacom went down, we went down. Now SAT3 is down...and we're down again... lose-lose situation... :( :(

To add another 10c and hopefully this makes sence to all...

Telkom is part of the consortium that owns and maintane the SAT2, SAT3 and SAFE routes. They sit in the middle of the route and that is why they are inlvoved with it all. Before the actual maintenance on the cable is done the effected services are moved to an alternative route to make sure intenational service is not interupted for a prolonged length of time. What you will experience is higher latencies to international destinations but service is not taken out of opperation.

Hopefully this will explain the availability of your internet service a bit better.

It sonds like you getting screwed over and over again. Maybe IS indicates that they have redundancy over SAT3 and SAFE but their configurations for the backup is not working correctly and when the one cable goes the equipment does not switch to the backup...
