You know, because of the unlikelyhood of it ever happening, I didn't really think it through, but in my mind I'd like to go to California, Los Angeles, Houston, Colorado....but yeah, what do I know.

I think that was kind of the point of this post. Last year and the year before that, I had zero doubts that I wanted to go. However when the opportunity presents itself, you then realize the implications.
Its too far down the line now, and we will be going. But before that, I did have my doubts.

Don't procrastinate further bru, you gotta make the commitment to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. At least you can say you've started things.

I remember when I was a kid, perhaps 8 or 9, thinking that I would never move to America because there were waaaay to many places to be able to make a choice. All I knew was my little hometown and America seemed mindbogglingly big like the Universe is to me now.
Congrats! IIRC, the approval means that they have a green piece of paper that says that you are of a particular status in the US from a start date to end date. They should send this to you, possibly with some other supporting documents, and then you will make an appointment with your local consulate/embassy. The interview should be trivial (what is your name, what do you do type things just to make sure you are who you say you are). They should then take your passport for a few days, and they will put your visa into it. You can then enter the country from the visa start date.

Everyone has doubts about major decisions in their lives. You mentioned(unless I misunderstood) that your SO wasnt as keen as you where. Thats probably the only reason I wouldnt go. Im not saying you shouldnt. If you do go, be prepared that it may not work out for you. If it doesnt, its not a failure. Its a learning experience. One that you should feel privileged you where able to experience. Make the best of it. Embrace the challenge. Whatever the outcome, it can only enrich you.
The best advice I can offer is steer clear of getting locked into any "South African" community where all they do is take about the "old country". Not saying avoid South Africans. Avoid the "when we's". You must do your best to assimilate into American society and embrace it. If you dont like Americans enough to want to do that, then you shouldnt emigrate to that country
Remember, your kids have to form friendships with them Best of luck.

Let me summarize what has happened over the past year.
When I got the offer it was around December last year. In January, we were really very undecided and my SO was not prepared for the uproot and move. In March, I went over to see the place and to meet the people, and the SO joined me soon after. When she saw the place, met the people. She was pretty much sold and it was a thumbs up from her. I got the formal offer around May, and submitted the necessary documentation in July. During this time, it was a period of us breaking the news to our family and it was also initially shock, but they came around after some time. The attorneys really dragged their feet with the application and only really submitted the application around September. We eventually received to approval this week.
During the time of July till now, our lives have been in limbo. Everything just comes to a standstill as you don't know what the future holds. So I am finally relieved that it has been finalized and we can now move forward. It is extremely nerve wrecking though, and I think being away from our close knit family is going to be the worst part of it. That is the ONLY negative IMO. Everything else is just a positive.
