Encoding DVDs

Hi all,

What DVD ripping software do you recommend? (using Ubuntu 9.10 so preferable available in repos).

Secondly, any advice as to which codecs to use, what is an acceptable filesize for quality, and tips in general that you can think of?

I think Handbrake is just awesome. Although as MyWorld pointed out in another thread, mkv and m4v are the extensions it supports now (h264, mpeg-4 and vp3 being the supported codecs).

Thanks, have installed Handbrake. It looks simple enough to use.

Any advice as to what a decent bitrate or filesize is for quality.

I use K9copy also. 700meg seems to be the standard size for a standard length movie.

I need a good app that can convert dvd's to decent size and still have very good quality.

FairUseWizard 2 gives better picture quality than handbrake in my experience, takes for ever though. Plus its painful to run it in a VM.

Maybe its time try give handbrake another chance.

I've tried quite a few, and have settled with Handbrake. I find it pretty close to a one click burn process.
