Engagement ring advice?

the engagement ring must be equal to 3 times your monthly salary kapeesh. now if you not prepared to get her that kind of ring then come get some of mine i have loads saphires and diamonds, champagne diamonds, the works. yes my hubby treasured my very existance when he said "let's get married" and i said "HELL NO!!!" lol

i can't wear mine anymore since the RSD, my hands and fingers are constantly swollen and i'm not taking them to get resized the diamonds will just be stolen.

What I did was this: I went to a jeweler that manufactures the stuff themselves not a chain store.

I bought a plain ladies wedding band, 4mm platinum in my case. I think is cost about R4000 (I think). I used that to propose with but made it clear that this was the wedding band and that my fiancee (now-wife) could choose her own engagement ring design.

I had also agreed up front with the jeweler that if my fiancee wanted a different metal he would give me a full refund as long as I allowed him to make the final ring. We also agreed he would re-use the platinum to make the engagement ring and credit the value of the ring in full.

In the end she decided to keep the wedding band and just have a new engagement ring made. I think the whole lot cost about R10k in the end for the rings and then a few more thousand for the rock.

I hate these equations people use. 3 times monthly income, 10% of annual income? Where does this come from? Not attacking the good lady Celine but I really don't get this. Spend what you can afford. The ring is not worth anything after you've bought it because you never intend to resell it.

Indeed - If 3 x monthly is over 20K, then spending according to the formula is short sighted if you want to budget for a bond / school funds, etc. Who came up with it anyway?
I'd rather spend some extra on the honeymoon and definately try to do everything DEBT FREE.
No need to tie the knot to a massive debt to hold you both back for years...

so how did u propose? or if u didn't already, how are u gonna propose?
