Entry-level Virtual Private Server price comparison - April 2024

We've been using a low-end Absolute Hosting vps as one of our remote monitoring points in $DAYJOB. Been very stable. Must be at least 2 years now I think.
Thank you for supporting us and the kind words.

If you’re on a budget VPS then you should now have 200 mbps

I few minor corrections there @mylesillidge

I've been running a small dedicated game server (via Steam) on a VPS for the past 7 years. Costs me about R200 p/m for 2vCPUs, 2GB RAM, 10GB storage and 1TB bandwitdh (@500Mbps). Not issues whatsoever. In the last 7 years I've had so little down time, I couldn't even call it that.

They do have their Fair Use policies and Terms and Conditions, but I've never exceeded any thresholds...
The server runs in a Teraco DC.

Unfortunately, it's with a UK based company. I would love to rather give my money to a South African company, but unfortunately, some of these local VPS providers have stupid rules about gaming servers that just don't make sense (are they over provisioning en masse so much so that they cannot guarantee a decent service???). The one I engaged with that had those rules are on that list.

Oh well, their loss then.

Decent pricing though - they just need to work on their T's & C's.

@Mr.Jax if we spoke about this then I’m sorry about not allowing gaming servers at the this current time.

We may look into this towards the end of the year as we bring up additional data centre locations and can possibly offer gaming VPS services from Cape Town

Not allowing gaming? Good thing I read the comments because I pretty much made up my mind to get a server for valheim. Now can't do

What is the reasoning for not allowing games?

I’m so sorry about that, the reasoning is that we’re trying to reduce our footprint for ddos attacks.

I am excited about Cape Town becoming one of the locations, I hope it will be possible to migrate our existing VPSs from JHB to CPT once available, I would move mine the second this option becomes available, even if it means a different IP must be allocated :)

Migration from JHB to CPT is already part of the blue print, the IP’s will change though but still be within our AS

Biggest problem I have with VPS services is the storage size , 100gb isn't a lot for things like intensive game servers or file servers

Some will ban you for abuse on service in SA....

But hosting yourself is so easy these days
