The game is amazing and with 180 ping you barely feel lag. Trust me if you buy the cheap version you would want to upgrade to the edge of darkness in a couple of days. They've announced that we are getting SA servers on Twitter. Add me if you want to squad up. TheJackalZA
I am not a rat. I hunt people with or without gear.

I believe they are in the late stages of actually setting up a server cluster in SA.

Just going to add, when the EFT discounts come along it is cheaper to purchase it through them and you will be supporting the dev directly.
I mean for the South African servers thing :) Already got the game, been playing for quite a while!

I don't get the concept if I'm honest.
I've watched a lot on Youtube and twitch, but don't understand the point of it.

So you choose a map and your gear then spawn and the objective seems to go get more gear then extract.
What do you do once you've got all the gear in the world? Camp and troll players with not so good gear while they are looking for gooder gear?

I understand something like DayZ where the object is to survive as long as possible and create your own stories as you play since the roleplay element is there, but here you don't do that, because once you all geared up, you extract.

I would've preferred it be a survival style game.

Not so sold on it anymore. I dislike looter shooters greatly and this seems to be a looter shooter.

It is a skill based looter shooter with battle royale mechanics. Yes, some looted out players does camp extraction points, it is a admitted mess, but a work in progress.

This is a beta, and it won't be released anytime soon.

Since 0.12 the game did boom. Streamers made it popular and they will also probably shape the game now because their viewers made them game ambassadors. It has happened to many titles now - the good, the bad and the ugly.

They have a enhancement system in the game which I question. I believe this needs rank based matchmaking, but I doubt it will be introduced.

The devs said this game is about punishment which means that hardcore players will reign supreme when it comes to that.

Sounds dreadful.
Think I'll pass and just watch videos once in a while.
Sounds like it gets repetitive very quick.

Has anyone been getting disconnected a lot recently? It happened to me a lot this passed weekend in the evenings, I get a black pop up msg which read "Server disconnected" or Session host lost (something along those lines), I was able to get back into the same round and get my gear out but I lost quite a lot overall recently

It's one of the few games where I play it mainly for the gameplay, and the "sense of progression". There is story, but I don't know if you can complete it in the same way that you can other MP games like The Division and WoW.

You play to get money to buy better guns, mainly so that you can play more with better gear. It's also not just some arb damage number that increases.
Imagine a game like Counterstrike, only slower, and you carry your money with you between games. To buy that M4 or AWM, you need to play a good couple of games, so when you finally have it, you just try so hard not to lose it, since you know you can't just buy another one in the next game.

I think this is closer to a Shooting Simulator with survival elements and a tad of RPG progression on your character , than just a plane shooter

I can't find any updated news on the local servers. I wonder how long it will take.

For anyone wondering.. Yesterday it looks like the first SA server went live.. First time I played without the red ping warning on the top right hand of the screen. You can check your latency to the server by clicking on the "Change Server" icon on the Launcher. Average matching times are quoted as 0:20. Feels like a brand new game with the low latency!

I believe it was inspired by Stalker, an old classic.

There are various progression systems such as:
- Light RPG elements
- Player Hideout Upgrades
- Quests
- Trader leveling
- Unlock areas via keys and other items located

There's talk of a karma/reputation system and more gameplay elements in future.

It's a hardcore FPS raid based looter shooter with well designed maps (extracts are fine IMO and improving) and with the most detailed weapon modding of any game I'm aware of (Gun porn basically). The gun-play is also very well done. It has a steep learning curve (unusual for an FPS). It draws the sort of crowd who prefer tactics over arcade play-style. It is extremely suspenseful and stressful (Slow pacing with sudden high risk), and as a result has a high reward potential. Best played with a buddy to cover your backside.

It's not for everyone of course. It's a specific crowd who are usually drawn to these sort of games (Twitch popularity aside). i.e. if you like milsim stuff and games that lean on the side of realism then this is for you.

I'm not a regular player per se, but I've been around since version 0.8 and still haven't seen half of the content. I avoid labs map as I'm not good enough for that yet, and I hardly know the reserve map. More maps are still being developed. Just a warning, they still may do resets after major patches as it is still in development.

I've played all Stalker games several times and this game is not like it at all.
I also do not see the 'inspired' bit.

Chernobylite is a Stalker inspired game.
Not this.

Am I right in thinking that to play the Beta one has to pre-purchase the game?
Are the higher tier options worth the extra cost? Is a larger backpack that valuable?

I like that description. I will vow myself to stay away from looter shooters.

I just wasted 20 mins watching a video where the guy is constantly strafing, dodging and reloading and he was the only soul there. Dreadful indeed...

Everything you get in the higher tiers can be lost, except:
Gamma Container - Stuff which you put in this container is not lost when you die. The "normal" tier gives you a 2x2 Alpha container, whereas the Gamma Container you get with Edge of Darkness is 3 x 3. This really helps a LOT, especially when you start taking keys with you into a raid. Or you want to take ALL the meds you are likely to need, and don't just want to lose everything when you die.
Extra inventory space - self explanatory. Helps a lot, especially in the early game, but you dont really need it.
Trader Standing - You need to spend money with them and do missions to increase your standing with traders, allowing you to buy better stuff from them.
Tactical Tomahawk - this is a melee weapon, which you don't drop on death.
Pistol case - As long as you don't take it with you into battle, you wont lose it.

I started with the normal version and upgraded to Edge of Darkness over the weekend, just to up my enjoyment a bit with the larger container and stash. You can upgrade afterwards, and it is sickeningly expensive. They price they quote is excl 15% vat, exl R100 or so transaction fee, and then you get a shitty exchange rate as well.
When I just bought the game, I took my only AK, armour and rig I got with me into battle. While standing around, adjusting my mouse speed, someone killed me, and I pretty much lost my best starting gear.

The only other MP FPS I've play that I enjoyed this much, was Counter-Strike 1.6 back in the day.
PubG was good, but this is much better. Apex was meh. Battlefield was great with friends, but this is SO much better. CoD is CoD....
As I've said before, this is the only MP FPS I even consider playing on my own in the last 5 years.

I think I will only get it if some of my friends get it. We're still in the Apex train....
