But tell me how such a critical structure can collapse without safety engineers not noticing it? How did it collapse in the first place? Concrete structures should last way beyond specified life-time? I imagine reports were sent to highest management, who, being cadre-deployed idjits, did nothing.
 
Judging by the pic I would say it wasn't utilized according to spec. That pic looks like the silo was full of coal dust not coal pieces. I'd imagine a cubic meter of coal dust weighs more than a cubic meter of coal pieces...
 
I've had load shedding from 6-9 pm today...

Not sure.
If it could, then they'd be halving the timespan that four could run.

I know that there are feeding issues right now because of the debris...

I just hope Eskom aggressively cuts people off...a cascading grid blackout would be a nation disaster...

Still - their decision to load shed on a Sunday to save coal for Monday makes me optimistic...someone in charge doing their best to think strategically.

Eskom gets blamed unfairly for this mess imo - its the highest level decision makers that screwed us over...Eskom wanted to build plants long ago but were denied by political forces...

The government has blamed the power shortages on increased demand caused by years of economic growth and the provision of electricity to black townships that were not connected in the apartheid era.

But it has also admitted that it failed to heed a warning from Eskom 10 years ago that without new power stations the company might not be able to meet demand for electricity by 2007.

Reading about this collapse I thought this must be an old power station, but its actually one of the newest we have currently. Reading the history it almost sounds like Medupi though:

Construction started in September 1983 and by April 1996 the first unit was connected to the grid. The last unit was commissioned in April 2001.

That's 18 years to complete. Wonder if its partly due to the UCG complexity?
