Eskom CEO Announcement

May this be a turning point for Eskom. May he get the support he needs to get the job done; to get all the wheels turning again. Our very economy is fully dependent on this man to be a success.

Why is he white. I thought no whites wanted part of Eskom or helping them to get back into the black (rather than the red.... get it... hur hur hur hur)

Takes one brave person to take that role. Any self respecting CEO who wants to maintain his reputation will stay away from SOEs.

Or he's given it thought, and thinks he actually has a shot of turning it around and if he does he will be headhunted across the globe and be able to ask for practically anything he wants.

Risk vs huge reward.

Some useful insights in his previous turnaround projects (and the Nampak mess):

So Whites are never again allowed to lead anything in Government?

****ing racists.

He was earning nearly 20 bar a year at Nampak. He doesn't need to work, and this will probably be his last job.

At 50, I doubt it.

He runs Eskom for 5 years, turns it around. He goes from earning 20 bar a year at Nampak, to earning $25 - $50m a year almost anywhere on the planet.

He may not need to work ever again, but if he pulls this off he can setup his family to never have to work for generations to come.

Cabinet are so desperate they want him to start sooner. I'm not convinced that one guy can work miracles:

He would pretty much have commitments at his prior employment as well. Its nice to ask but I doubt anything will materialize and being the Christmas period, this just sounds like a plea to voters that "look! We're doing something!".

Regardless of his credentials or actual ability he will not be able accomplish anything without the full support of government and the means to convince the unions about what needs to be done to clean house.

Look at the COO, Jan Oberholzer. He was put in there to bring about change, says all the right things as bluntly as can be, but can do squat without the powers that be agreeing on a turnaround strategy.

Same with the former SAPO guy.
