Eskom electricity supply at risk

Ja, I heard this on the radio 702 discussion last night. Stupid. Using threats to scare the public into acquiescing. I hope Nersa only allows them half that increase.

btw, why has the government not approved several smaller electricity providers to start providing? I thought that was the plan back then when Eskom was denied its increases in the 90s??? What are they waiting for?

Why would the electricity supply be at risk?

The guavamint can just subsidise the shortfall in operating expenditure if push comes to shove.

Why are they making their problems ours? They knew they were going to run out of electricty a good 5 years before the **** started to happen, they decided to carry on with wasted money, fat salarys etc.

We shouldn't bare this burden, they and the Gov must.

Last year's increases were for higher coal prices, which has now dropped, electricity requirments were very high, now its not anymore, but it doesn't matter as whatever the situation, eskom will find ways to make us pay.

we use more electricity, eskom threatens us to use less or pay penalty, now we have used less we have to pay panalty anyways.

WTF????? maybe we should sue eskom for all the money we spent on gas / energy saving lamps / solar geysers, and for all the factories that saved energy.

Its afterall advertising based on a lie.
 
I say give it to them, and in return we demand:

1 - Direct Eskom to Final Customer service, no more municipal middle-man to raise expenses.
2 - Variable tariffs and metering equipment to handle high-usage and low usage hours.
3 - No more meter reading chaos, meters must report meter readings electronically.
4 - We want the right to self-provide if Eskom are not meeting our requirements.

Lol.
1. Eskom sells to the municipality. Believe me you don't want to deal with them directly.
2. Variable tariffs are going to be implemented- this is in the pipeline (half of which is bottlenecked on municipal sides)
3. The municipality does all of that, so go to them for that. Eskom doesn't know how much a household uses.
4. We are allowed to self-provide. You're just not allowed to sell the excess to the municipality (yet).

And where do Eskom and government get their money from? Governments do not have a penny of their own. Paying for Eskom capex via taxes is a terrible idea, not least because it xfers our money to the state, and the state is hard to wean from sucking the taxpayer tit. The bottom line is we've had cheap power for years 'n years, and now the plant needs to be renewed and expanded. Either way, we pay.

the government received a total number of close to zero bids from private suppliers. our electricity is way too cheap for private suppliers to make a profit here.

However, the current price of electricity does not reflect the cost of generating this electricity for IPPs. This poses a hindrance for global companies looking to invest in the region, says Essono. Add to this the fact that IPPs do not have the same benefits of support that State-owned utility Eskom enjoys.

How to solve this problem: FREE UP THE GOD-DAMNED MARKET!

This government-enforced monopoly is a joke. Give other investors the opportunity to enter the market. People are itching to provide a service that Eskom are incapable of providing. We need free competition. E-scum have no right to hold us at ransom like this.

Don't you understand that when government bares a burden, it is the people that are baring that burden? The government has no means of baring any burden themselves. When they need money, they take it from us. All means of recovery comes from tax-payer money. So even if you don't see it in the form of a tariff hike, you'll see it in the form of a tax hike.

It’s a bit late for you Eskom/ Government to start making plans now. You were told about this 14 years ago, but you turned your back on the people hold told you to... Now look what trouble you got yourselves in... Eskom/Government you only have yourself to blame for this no one else!!!

I thought it was the other way around, Eskom did ask the government for more money to build for the future, but the Government declined because they wanted to go the private route and then Eskom never pushed the matter any further. But they did tell the Government that more power generation would be needed. So I would peg it at 60% the Government's fault and 40% Eskom's fault.
 
Eskom's failure is clearly a failure of management. Under the previous regime it was a model electricity supplier.

During the hearings, Eskom was accused of flouting the Municipal Finances Act by submitting its application late, and failing to provide sufficient information on why the steep increase was required.

Maroga said a lot of consultation and dialogue was required before Eskom could make a determination on the cash it needed.

This process had not yet been finalised, hence the application for the interim tariff hike.

How many private enterprise CEO's would get away with providing their shareholders "scant information" but that merely the "application was sufficient" reason why shareholders should contribute heavily to the running of the enterprise?
Get Eishkom some REAL leadership.
 
The message is actually quite simple: Give us what we want or we'lll cut your power at 6pm so you can't have a decent evening at home.

It was the same crap last year, all of a sudden after the tarrif hikes were approved the "loadshedding" disappeared.... Within a day or so...
 
eskom management just want their bonuses
