Eskom warns of network overload in Gauteng

Eskom has issued a warning of a significant rise in network overloading as a result of increased illegal electricity activities in Gauteng due to dropping temperatures.

In a statement on Wednesday, Eskom appealed to the public to refrain from using electricity indiscriminately, illegally connecting to the grid, bypassing metres, and tampering or vandalising electricity infrastructure.

magically stuff goes wrong when there is
1) strikes
2) wage negotiations
3) price increase
4) document exposés
5) anc working its cogs
Actually this is basically their load reduction notices, high density areas are ones with a lot of townships, a lot of illegal connections and a lot of leaving things like ovens on to warm the house.

Well, I am going to put more load on it now to force my batteries to charge from the grid and not just solar just in case I need it.

Their tweet is interesting. Basically a number of people saying "Why don't you just say Soweto?"

ESCUM is the one who is intimidated when trying to disconnect illegal connections! If I am not mistaken, Electricity Distribution is a National Key Point, why then is ESCUM not treating the illegal connections with the highest priority that it deserves? Send in the army to escort the ESCUM team who are doing the disconnections.

Perhaps, but I have replied in general terms. I've added the tag vir you.

Cause it's not just Soweto, it's any high density area :-)

Fair enough but I wonder if dropping non-paying users in Soweto would fix most of the issues.

One way or another, I'm glad they're dropping the freeloaders first. If I lived in those areas and paid and got cut off I would be pissed, but thankfully I don't.

Drop the frequency of non-paying areas to 35Hz and the voltage to 190 VAC

One can't change the frequency as all the Eskom generators feeding the grid need to be kept in sync else they will be fighting each other.
The only way to drop the frequency to a specific area would be to dedicate one of the power stations to an area and use seperate distribution infrastructure.

You would need to disconnect Soweto from the entire grid.
They have dropped the free loaders (and this is not only in Soweto)-or at least they try - the problem is they reconnect themselves - eskom come disconnect - they reconnect - rinse wash repeat - can add in there plenty of times theses guys attack the eskom employees (and they get the whole community in an area to attack them ) so eskom doesn't even bother and just put those places on the load reduction schedule and once their transformer blows they leave them in darkness for weeks until the community agrees to protect their employees and fines are paid etc.

I am sure it means a lot of low compliance areas are going to be seeing a lot less electricity than the average.
Well as Eskom continues to fall apart it will expand to more areas and eventually hit paying areas and me and you. That's what people don't realise. The real issue is Eskom's aging and deteriorating infrastructure and people suddenly paying won't magically fix that.

"Please don`t steal electricity, rather freeze to death. And if you do steal, then rest assured we will do nothing."

I've just put on the heater. It's going to get cold later.
