Eskom load-shedding a temporary setback: minister

We've had wet weather before without Eskom complaining about wet coal. In fact, coal gets washed before being used. So what is Eskom doing? Exchanging our coal for China's lower grade quality?
 
Still no one mentions that Eskom spends more on employee home loans than coal...

Low grade coal is the only coal used in power generation. What do you mean washed? They do dry it with hot hair after it is pulverized but excessive moisture can still make it hard for plants to operate at full loads.

From what I understand, coal is wet washed after being crushed to improve the quality, separating the non combustables. Our coal, compared to China's, is old in geological terms so doesn't degrade in water as quickly thus much more efficient in terms of power, hence the suspicion. Why has wet weather not been a problem before until now?

The coal is separated at the mine.

Wet coal has always been a problem. Of course, there are probably other issues that they're not telling us about. For example, I drove past Kriel on Monday when it wasn't raining and they had two of the 6 units off already, so the problems go deeper than coal I think. I think a lot of generating capacity is offline for unscheduled maintenance and they're not saying it.

Or maybe they are just trying to do as much maintenance as they can before winter and the poop really hits the fan.
