Eskom load shedding back on tonight

Was quite annoyed when lights went out in Rosebank... Had just taken out food to be warmed up and was about to pop into the microwave... Oh well, cold food tonight.

Get a Cadac cylinder and a cooker hood. Even a gel stove will suffice for heating food.
 
Not sure 100 percent but I guess involves slowing down tons of machinery and then bringing it up again... And putting the load on in such a way that it doesn't get slowed down and put out of sync again

In the old days it was a manual process, but these days it should all be computer controlled. Not sure about Koeberg though, as it is also a few years old. Once the turbine is up to speed the use an oscilloscope (basically) to match the phase output of the generator and the grid. Interesting link here.

If the turbine is not in sync with the grid and they connect it, the grid will "see" the generator as a motor and try to bring it up to speed. The larger the angle difference between the two the more torque is applied. Considering that the generator rotor weighs quite a few tonnes this large applied load could damage (or destroy if difference is big enough) the generator and turbine.

Electricity went off in Somerset west at 20:00. Cranked up the generator(5kw) and everything is back online.

Need to soundproof it a bit more though. Currently have it running in the garden shed at the back of the house.
 
Been off since Monday morning at 06h00 and only came back on earlier today at 18h30 after the municipality spend the whole time fixing, only to hear it was actually not load shedding but a mess-up from COJ municipality that caused it.

Also bear in mind that the generators at Koeberg don't operate at 3000rpm (which leads naturally to the required 50Hz frequency). They're quite large (900MW each) and run at 1800rpm so the switchgear & process needed to synchronise them to the grid is more complicated than for the other generators in Eskom's fleet. I don't think it takes days though - the spokesman probably means that they have to get the reactor up to power again (they probably need to shut it down when the unit trips) and that will take a couple of days.

I drove home from Sandton after 8. Mostly dark and traffic lights out. Was quite harrowing.

I used to drive past Sandton city and Grayston when I lived in JHB. Yoh the peak hour traffic...
 
Summerstrand was out from 8pm to 10pm....luckily it wasn't as bad as that 4 Hour load shedding we had a while ago :(

Time to charge up everything, and have supper now :D
