Eskom pricing decision soon

Eskom will know on Thursday whether the National Energy Regulator of SA has approved its requested 34% interim price hike application.

I have a bad feeling about this! Ms Hogan has been all for this and I can only see my electricity bill shooting through the roof!

Just where is it all going to end?

And what about the knock effect this will have on inflation? I am sure it will be another reason for food price inflation to go and add another few points to their hikes. Hope not!

We all know that this will get the nod ..... especially with Hogan carrying on the way she has. She disgusts me almost as much as Eskom does.

The way it's been reported in the media makes it look like there's no chance for it to go through. But it probably will nevertheless

Has Hogan been for this increase? Maybe the ANC have finally got her to stop going against the regime

Eskom will get some kind of increase. And they will get another increase after that. So eventually we will feel it. We can only hope that they dont get it all at once.

Excuse my ignorance but wtf? Why have a national regulator when there's only one energy supplier in S.A.? A bit pointless if you ask me. Now if there were say 5 or 6 different energy suppliers then a different story.

Who runs the regulator?

NERSA is there so that eksdom cant simply do what they want.

Ok I do to a degree understand that, but if ESKOM is partly (or fully) a government run business why the need for regulation?

There's no escaping steep increases over the next few years. Necessary if we are to get the base load stations we need.

Price forecast (in 2009 Rand):

Jan 2009 : 100
Jan 2010 : 130
Jan 2011 : 170
Jan 2012 : 220

These are wholesale price increases, not retail. Municipalties will charge even more, with even higher percentage increases, I expect. Within 4 years electricity will cost more than double what it does today, in today's money. This is almost inevitable.

- The 'rich' will subsidise the poor.
- It's either these increases, or perpetual load-shedding (or both if bad management continues).

Time to look at more energy-efficient systems. Start by putting in a heat pump for hot water.
