Hey guys, Im looking for a LAN based external hard drive.
Siemens used to have a LAN based storagebird thingy but I cant find those anymore.

Any Idea where I can find such an animal?

It doesnt have to be big capacity, just needs to be a LAN interface.

Look for NAS (Network Attached Storage).

There are a whole bunch of solutions, ranging from single disk to 4+, depending on your requirements.

Apparently Mecer has external chassis with ethernet ports.

But then I have this thing about Mecer. *shudder*

Have a look at the Western Digital My Book World Ediition II, they are very nice.

Build your own NAS Server! Use an old PC (P1/P2 etc) and install www.freenas.org :D

(I realise its not ideal to lug a pc around) but this will be fine for a permanently attached drive(s) at home!

Beanie, waiting for u dude! ;)

I just ordered a Netgear SC101 + 160GB ATA hard drive from Sybaritic. I'll let you know how it is when I get it.

Ryder, I have already looked at that, being a linux kiddie it would have been my first idea to run with.
But..... I dont have a whole bunch of old pc's lurking around, I need about 32 of these things.
I once saw A Siemens storagebird that was an enclosure that ran Samba and NFS so that would be great.
I cant use USB because some of the sites are running old hardware and Red hat 7.1 so ethernet based that I can run cron jobs to rsynch stuff to sounds ideal....
What you recon?

Very nice system but probably overkill for what I need.
Most of the sites used zip drives to backup datasets, but you cant get them anymore.
We have been using cd-r for a while but its not super reliable, so an 80GB hard disk would be a good call IMO to use....

You can get them at MAKRO - Storagebird LAN2...

These cost about R780 and have space for two drives.

I know this is an old thread, but for the record, the Netgear SC101 is not a great choice for a NAS. The software is Windows only, and it only exports to a single computer. i.e. it is not a true NAS.

I agree fully, its a really crappy drive.
you can hack your way through it to mount it in a linux share but its not stable and I think its useless.

This product has technical problems that I am researching- it doesn't perform at all.

I am looking into developing a NAS with really good performance and a good price tag for this community.
