Flying hours vs Flying hours

Taking all the statistics in account, you are probably much MORE SAFE on a "no name brand" plane flying into a massive storm than driving home from work in South Africa....

Now that is very very true :p

My brother said he'll never get on a plane - "What if the guy next to you's time has run out?" - Jou tyd is jou tyd :D

On the topic of the safety aspect of flying -

1. I am scared of flying, but not to the point of having a phobia. If I want to get to certain destinations, I have no other choice.

2. I do not deny the importance of having an experienced pilot and good equipment in sterling condition. However, I am a firm believer in fate - if it's your time to go, it's your time .... it could even happen in a brand new plane.

or if it's the time to go for the person next to you and the plane goes down for it :D

"no name brand" Etihad

Etihad is buy no means a no name brand globally. It's huge and very well respected and as mentioned backed by oil money so not likely to fold and from a part of the world that in theory shouldn't attract terrorist attacks (I'm not sure about the last part but I don't think the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has many enemies in the mid-east).

It's like Gwen Stefani naming her son Zuma making news in ZA. I'm willing to be she's never heard of Jacob Zuma but locally it's all over the news. Small town syndrome.

If the plane goes down, it means that everyone on board's time has come !

Who is going down, and who is coming, and why wasn't I invited?

I would fly Etihad no problem! (if they would let me on board that is)!

Back on topic. In my experience, Ethiad offers more consistent service than Emirates but less destinations with less frequencies. I've had good and bad flights on both but Emirates does tend to lack the flair of Ethiad. Again, your experience will depend on the class of travel. In general Economy is awful on every airline except maybe Singapore.
It's the people in the front who generate the most revenues for the airlines. The cattle classes are afterthoughts.

Necro'd.

Any updates from posters who have recently flown with Etihad?

I flew with them last month - would not recommend

Especially if you have a long layover (more than 6 hours)

Food is terrible - Don't care attitude from the staff on board
You are not allowed inside the international terminal until 6 hours before your flight.

If you have a long layover, there are only 2 coffee shops and 5 other shops that you can visit.
This also means you cannot access any lounges either as they are all in the international terminal.

Even OR Tambo is better than Abu Dhabi International

Personally, would never fly with them again

Emirates or Qatar Airlines for the win

Wow. Very conflicting opinions.
Its to be expected you either have a great or sub par experience.

For example my wife flew for work to France via Iberia - absolutely hated it I flew a few days later with an awesome experience. I just know for both of us Qatar was one of the best international flying experiences we had. Cathay pacific was awesome too but thats to Hong Kong so not an option here.

Flew in June
Good experience.

But then my transit was only 3 hours and I don't eat airplane food.
