They carried out a series of bomb attacks leading up to the elections in 1994, with the intention of starting a civil war.
These included several bombings in Soweto, one at Jan Smuts Airport and one in downtown JHB. At least 20 people were killed in the attacks.
And then of course there was their ill-fated Bophuthatswana invasion, where they drove around shooting at random civilians.
