Euro 2012 Thread

england didnt play well enough to go through. the italians played much better. appeared to actually want to win. england would win the ball, clear it and then give it straight back to the italians!! roy's teams are frustrating to watch.

A quick word on Pirlo's panenka penalty. It was magnificent in many ways, not least because it underlined that he thinks. Pirlo knew that Hart had done his homework, and that the Italian usually goes low, to one side, without a great deal of power. Hart guessed right, so Pirlo dinked it down the middle. It was the potentially the first penalty ever taken by a brain in a major tournament. He also claimed after the game that he did it to unsettle the England takers. Taking a penalty in a European Championship quarter-final while at the same time psyching out your opposition. What a man.

Spain legend: 'Pirlo better than Xavi'

England had the lowest possession stats of any team at Euro2012 with an average of 35% possession (last night).

What about Greece in their qf game?

They probably had a bit more, they did score 2 goals after all so they weren't completely defensive.

It's just a stat someone posted on twitter, I'll have to go check the stats :)

According to opta, England only had 32% of the possession last night.

UEFA.com has it at 64 (Italy) - 36 (England). I got the Germany-Greece figure from the same source. Interesting to know why there's such a discrepancy.

I'd trust opta before anyone else. Stats is their business!

Perhaps they measured it differently? I've heard some people measure possession by % of passes completed. I.e. if there are 100 passes in a game, Italy made 60 of them, England 40, then the possession would be 60% 40%. But I thought possession would be measured by "time" you are in control of the ball? I.e. if you if you play for 100min (for simplicity's sake) and the ball is under your control for 60% of that time (even if you don't pass it) then you'll have 60% possession?

I'm not exactly sure how they measured it, perhaps that explains the discrepancy?

Very disappointing play from England, I honestly don't know how the team was chosen - eg: Carol of all people

England lost the game and were never in it from the start, I am not a fan of either side Italy nor England but this was a poor performance from both sides.

Germany should have it easy this Euro.

Poor from both sides? Did you actually watch the match? The only poor one for Italy was Balotelli

I wish. But I have a nasty feeling Spain will snuff them. Again.

Italy vs Portugal Final. Who wants to bet?

Portugal stand no chance against Spain. Iniesta, Xavi and the rest of that midfield will starve the Portuguese of possession and take Ronaldo and Nani out of the game. And without Ronaldo and Nani - especially Ronaldo - Portugal is not exactly a formidable opponent.

Germany and Italy should be entertaining but I'm shading the Germans, barring they improve on their performances and actually start finishing the countless opportunities they are creating every game. They're the only team to win every game thus far, but they've made them look harder by not finishing what they start and you won't get away with that against a team of Italy's caliber.

Spain 2 - 0 Portugal
Germany 2 - 1 Italy

Spain 1 - 0 Germany
