That gen was like the 3rd or 4th, maybe even 5th best international team at the time. It's not surprising they ended up winning nothing but what was surprising was the manner they crashed and burned so often.

These days with all the money and media focus being on the EPL you can't even judge accurately the quality of a squad based just by reading it. You have players that would've been playing for a top 6 Italian or Spanish team, playing for a relegation fodder team in the Prem/championship

They should rank teams take all the teams that qualify out of the group stage and rank them according to performance, and make the best teams vs the worst teams that qualify in the road of 16. If they not already doing that.

Seems more fair and gives teams more incentive to go after the game in the group stages

That adds a very subjective dimension to a very objective scoring system. Who decides which teams have "performed" best?

What's subjective about points scored, GD, GF, GA, cards received?

What's objective about the current system based on RNG on whether or not your group is drawn is such a way that the winner will face a 30% qualifier to the knockout

they're doing that already:
To determine the four best third-placed teams, the following criteria are applied, in the order given:

a. Higher number of points;
b. Superior goal difference;
c. Higher number of goals scored;
d. Higher number of wins;
e. Lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
f. Position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings (see Article 23), or if Germany, the host association team, is involved in the comparison, drawing of lots.

Oh geez like I didn't already know how they determined 4th place.

I'm not sure if you're slow or this is your first time watching this tournament.

But to dumb it down for you , I'm suggesting it would be more fair to use a similar system to the system they use to rank the best 4 3rd placed teams to rank the other qualifiers, to determine the knockout bracket.

Right now you have 4 1st place qualifiers vs 4 2
3rd place. 2 1st place vs 2 2nd place and 2 2nd vs 2nd place qualifiers. Y[COLOR=var(--text-light)]ou have 4 1st place teams getting the easy matches (in theory) just based on the luck of the draw.

This format with only 8 teams getting eliminated in the first round, all you need to do is win one match and you can sit back and defend for the next 2 matches, and you virtually guaranteed qualification to the knockouts, hell you even can afford to lose a match or maybe both remaining matches and you still can qualify.

What's worrying is the next WC is going to have a similar format group stage.
