Aww... No Necro :( But... *sniffle* Mah bootiful armah!

*cough*

I did some reading on MMORPG.com and it sounds good. The forums are filled with the usual annoying people, however, so I don't pay them much heed. I'll have to see what the end of the month brings. There are so many things I want to buy next month and I still owe Telkom R850-odd for my DSL which they'll likely bill me for next month.*sigh* I hate wanting things...

BlueCollar, which guild are you part of, if I may ask? Are they South African?

And.. you say there's an immersive storyline? That's all I'm really after in the end - something which will keep me entertained :D

Being a Lore Master sounds horrible... How can anyone bring themselves to setting poor, helpless wittle animals onto big ebil vishiss monsters? :( Much easier if it's the odd skeleton or mass of rotting flesh on legs ^.^

Haha, I play a healer and I always try to keep the pets of any LM's I'm grouped with alive - I also don't like seeing the poor bear or whatever get killed.

I play in a medium sized kinship (read, guild) that's about 60% South African, and the rest assorted Euro trash. All very nice people though.

WRT storyline - remember this is an MMO, so you can't really compare its storyline with something like Bioshock or Mass Effect, but for an MMO it's an unusually immersive story experience.

I understand, thank you, BlueCollar :D

Could I ask - have you played Age of Conan at all, and do you have any opinions on that as well?

There are two or three MMORPGs which I've been looking forward to - Warhammer Online, Star Trek Online (shurrup) and, as of recently, Knights of the Old Republic Online. But all of them are at least still a ways off, and it's been a long time since I've really enjoyed an MMO - mostly because the free rubbish I get my hands on is awful, but at least temporarily entertaining. I think it'll be nice to get back into a populated and engrossing MMO.

I'm glad you mentioned it - I was wondering about it, but wasn't sure who to ask. Although, it would've popped up in a thread at some point :D

It'll probably end up being LotRO. Other half wanted to buy it in town, but it was only the expansion.

Would you mind if I look you up in-game if/when we get it? :p

Lycan, dare i say try WOW :p ?

The cartoonish style graphics (of a 4year old game) suit it very well (to portray the atmosphere of warcraft).

Ive still got my LOTRO account, found it a bit slow in the beginning, the champion (think thats what i rolled) is ok

I thought about WoW as well, but the idea of it doesn't really appeal to me and each time I've tried to download a trial from their site, the link refused to work. I mostly gave up after that and lost interest.

I don't really mind a slow beginning if it's something that I'm going to play for a long time :p

I've wanted to play WoW ever since I saw that one South Park episode, but then... I don't know... It's never really been one of those games that made me go, "WOOT!" I'm not sure why, maybe because it feels too "commercialised" or because I'm aware of a number of childish idiots running around on the servers. But then, I know that you can easily ignore those kinds of people and the rest is all in my head. *shrug*

Right now, the games I've been considering, in no particular order, have been:

1. Dungeons & Dragons Online
2. Lord of the Rings Online
3. EVE Online
4. Lineage 2
5. Requiem Bloodymare

#5 Being a Free-to-Play mmo which apparently has absolutely no storyline and consists mostly of grinding - one of those things that are temporarily entertaining while waiting for something else.

The rest are all games I've wanted to play for a while and haven't been able to get around to due to le lack of le DSL, which was remedied last week Thursday. At the moment I've been giving EVE Online's trial a go, and so far it's enjoyable, but the 5-day skill learning detracts me from actually getting into it.

As I said, I'll probably get into LotRO because it seems to have what I'm looking for - a good old fashioned storyline (which lately seems to be in short supply) and that classic RPG ambience.

Although, there are a few up-and-coming MMOs which I'm also interested in such as Darkfall - after AntiThesis brought it to my attention, KOTOR, Star Trek Online and Warhammer Online. And I think the first to be released will be Warhammer... So right now I'm one confused person :p

Ive personally got:

WoW (active)
Eve (forgot my orginal acc details and have just finished the trial for the 2nd time lol )
AoC (froze my account since its not 'finished' yet)
GW (Nice change from WoW)
LoTRO (froze my account, had sub payment issues after my 'trial' and cba)

Requiem looks nice and gory, for a free game i might jam it for a few days.
Judging by what type of MMO you're after, LoTRO seems the best. Its incredibly rich in Tolkien lore, nice visuals, famous places, and a huge map to explore

Just a little thread necro.

I cancelled my Age of Conan sub this weekend after i hit lvl 80. There just wasn't anything left to do unless you're in a huge guild. There's especially zero content if you're in the 1-10 player type range. Even in WoW not alot of people actually end up doing 25-man raids, which is also why Wrath will have a 10-man -and- 25-man option for all raid instances. In AoC it's 25-man or nothing at lvl 80. AoC still a nice game to "level", maybe i'll return in a few months.

Anyhow, so i got meself into EVE again, with more focus this time. So far it's still the slow effect , but i must say what i do like:

a] 1.2 GB client download and that's it! [well there's 600MB "lite" version but i skipped that in favor for the graphics] , no freaking zillions of updates. The client is actually everything.

b] Yes, lots of waiting , but alot of it means i -can- go do other stuff. I think i got very anti-social with WoW-raiding in the sense you can't even answer your phone to chat...in EVE you got lotsa time ;).

c] Massive active community! I actually had to remove the "rookie" channel it was insane how busy it is. Right now it says there's 3500 people in the rookie channel alone.

d] Serverless , this is what i liked about GuildWars as well, you could find anyone anywhere if you liked. EVE is just better at it, no going "oh damn i need to transfer/reroll to be with my buddies" etc etc. Last login showed 35k people online...fun ;) .

EVE is probably the ideal game to play if you're not sure about your time commitments [i.e not able to be online for hours and hours per session]. I'm in that "stuck between MMOs" phase, where i'm still in a great WoW guild raiding 2-3 times a week, but it's slowly falling apart as people look for other games and get bored.

I've just started playing around in EVE, just bought my first months subs :D I'm pottering around on my own, a little mining here, a few courier jobs, a little PvE combat.

I find the slow pace relaxing :) I haven't ventured anywhere lower than 0.5sec for more than a couple of minutes, usually passing through a system doing a delivery.

Hey Detritus

Have you joined a corp yet? That generally adds to the excitement. If you want chat to me in game. My char "Val Vherosan" is part of VR Corp, a 65 member corp out which 3 are South Africans. We could always use few more... :D
