Hello everyone,

Can anyone explain what this “secure encrypted login” and “Peer to peer” file sharing is on my data usage?

I have tried researching but have not found anything. I think it’s a bit crazy that these items take up most of my data usage, even if its only a couple of mb’s

Maybe a VPN and torrents, what device is it?

Could be synchronisation with Google drive / OneDrive / iCloud etc

I also thought about this but these apps are disabled on mobile data. I have also disabled the wifi / mobile data assist settings on my iPhone

SEL is probably your mail app/account. Peer to peer I have no clue…

Maybe certain updates and security fixes are delivered via P2P?

I know that's the case with Windows unless you choose to disable it, so maybe Apple does the same.

So I needed to use my iPhone as a hotspot earlier this morning to pull some rather large files and SEL appears to be personal hotspot.

I have the same issue with my mothers iPhone. What makes it more complicated is that I live in Australia and she is in Fish Hoek, so we cannot easily check her phone or talk to Vodacom. It uses small amounts of her pre-paid data every hour all day long, 24/7, so using up around R2.40 per day or R 72 a month. See a screen shot of her bill below. She has wifi in her appartment so it makes no sense that the phone uses the pre-paid data instead of the wifi. She is a pensioner and hardly ever leaves her appartment so it is not while she is out of range from her wifi.

We have turned off everything she does not need. We only leave her mobile data switched on in case her wifi goes down and we need to get hold of her.

Any help to resolve this will be appreciated.

Wi-Fi Assist was one of those useful (or not useful) features Apple added years ago in iOS 9 that if it detects that the Wi-Fi network has a poor signal will ‘helpfully’ drop the signal in favour of your 4G or 3G signal.

To turn off this setting follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Mobile Data.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom where you will find the Wi-Fi Assist option.
  4. Deselect it.
We had deselected this setting years ago, but it appears that a recent iOS update has reverted it back to the original setting."

Had this same thing on my wife's phone

Can she not turn off mobile data? She will then have to manually turn it on if she wants to use data when not on wifi.

That looks like that “keep connection alive” ping some networks use for some reason.
Mybb did a few articles about it a year or two back and the same thing happens small amounts of data get used even when the phone is not being used, I think even if data was disabled, they didn’t seem to be able to get it to stop.

I've got this same issue today. Used about 10GB and I didn't even watch any videos or stream? I'm just connected to my work VPN and am not even doing much today at all. I even went away to gym for an hour now and 2GB was used up whilst I was away.

Disconnected all devices from the internet now. Because of this I've got 8GB left to last the rest of the month.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion but it does not make sense that it happens all the time on the hour 24/7

As a very old pensioner, just using the phone is a challenge let alone turning mobile data On and OFF. Even when we did turn it off, when there is a need for Mobile Data, it seems to turn on quite easily.

Hi, were you able to resolve the issue?

There was a time when we were told exactly which apps were causing the data usage, not some vague description of why the data usage. Name and shame please so we know what’s going on. Enough of smoke and mirrors.
