I've just moved and Telkom have transferred my existing number to the new place. problem is the exchange is now quite far away.

i've checked on the Exchange search site (http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/search/exchange/) and i've found there are two exchanges closer to me.

the question is : can you change exchanges, and if so has anyone tried to get telkom to change the exchange they are connected to?

currently on
http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RODE
want to move to either
http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RBRYAC
or
http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RBRYAG

Yes you can change exchanges but the trick is getting the person you speaking with to understand what it is you are asking them. I am in no way saying the others who don't get it are monkeys but rather they don't know about the fact that it is possible to change from one exchange to another (their knowledges lacks somewhat).

If for some reason you get no luck, try to apply for another phone line and see if they budge for the new exchange and once that is working, cancel your exisitng line (an extra cost) but will safe months of waiting and being transferred to different departments etc.

Good luck and do keep us posted :)

You definitely can not change exchange .an exchange feeds a fixed geographical area and the copper is not meshed with another exchange area.

I was about to say. I, incidentally, stopped at a telkom techie working on an exchange close to my spot. I asked if there was any way to get my line moved -crappy attenuation. He basically explained what you just said. Sucks ass, but yeah, what can you do.

EDIT: This happened today.

Hopefully the new MSAN projects will help because this is why they are putting them in ,is to alleviate the distance from the exchange on copper .
