Ext HDD not recognized

I have a Samsung P510 - Intel® Centrino® Processor T6400 (2.00GHz) - 2GB 91x2GB) - 160GB - 15.4” - Vista® Business + XP Media - Intel® X4500 128MB - DVDSM - 802.11a.b.g/n - 1.3 webcam - Downgraded to Windows XP.

I have a 80GB External LaCie HDD. When I plug it into the USB port NOTHING

I plug my iPhone in and it's instantly recognized.

I am not connected to any network drives so drive assignments is not the issue

Any help will be appreciated. BTW when I plug this into my old machine it instantly get's picked up (Windows XP on that machine also)

Can you see the device in device manager? Or Disk manager?

Have you tried another USB cord to connect your external HDD?
The problem maybe is on your USB port.

No it does not show in the device manager or Disk Manager

The cord works fine in my desktop. so it cannot be the USB cable

Have u tried installing the driver from the LaCie HDD cd first then checking if it is recognized.

No CD was supplied with the device. Like I explained before it works fine on my old machine with XP SP3. I cannot understand why it will not work on my new machine.
