I have an external 500gb WD Passport.
I have partitioned it to have one Mac partition and one NT partition - noticed today that the Mac partition was no mounting.
Opened Disk Utility and attempted to repair & verify the disk but no joy.

I get the following error:

Keys Out of Order
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
The volume Passport could not be repaired
ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

Is that partition trashed (if so what could have caused it??) or is there something other than Disk Utility I could try?

There are a lot of utilities out there. But John Gruber swears by Disk Warrior so I would say try that.

I have had the B-tree issue before and the ONLY thing that works is Disk Warrior. I threw Techtool, Data Rescue, File Salvage (the SWs I own) and fsck at it before taking the $100 DW leap. Now I own the whole damn suite. I suffered the B-Tree issue again about a month ago and again, DW was the only thing to bring it back

Thanks for the suggestions - Disk warrior is worth ten times what that data on that partition is worth so I'll probably just nuke it.

Any ideas as to what might have happened?

Most Likely: ExtHD was powered off before the Mac. This could be due to Ext being on mains and mac on clean or mac being laptop and a quick power drop or even a hub in between that lost power.
