F1 2012 thread

Yea but they won't win tomorrow.

Amazing lap by rosberg but they won't have pace when the rear wing gets clipped tomorrow.

What's interesting to me, F1 don't even mention DRS, they talk about "innovative front wing", not rear wing.

Mercedes’ innovative front wing helped Nico Rosberg to the first pole position of his Formula One career on Saturday afternoon in Shanghai, when a mighty lap of 1m 35.121s left him well clear of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren and Michael Schumacher’s sister car, with respective laps of 1m 35.626s and 1m 35.691s. But Hamilton’s five-place grid penalty makes it the first all-Mercedes front row since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Mercedes is exploiting the writing of the rules saying the driver cannot control any aerodynamic changes other than this legal change to the rear wing, which can only happen at specific times and places. When the angle of the rear wing is changed on the Mercedes racer, a small opening is exposed that allows air to enter a duct. This duct continues all the way to the front of the car where it blows the air over the front wing. The result is the extra air effectively stalls the front wing, reducing the drag and increasing the speed.

I think it's going to be interesting tomorrow.

It's basically the rear wing which gives it performance, once race day comes it is crippled.

Watch merc on the big fast maps, they won't be touchable in quali but race will be way different.

And yet again Hamilton out qualifies Button, this time by 4 places! That takes Hamilton's teamate qualifiaction beat percentage to about 95%.

5 place grid drop for hamilton!?!?!?!?

Extra obstacles for Lews:

Aus: McLaren team calling hamilton in too late after his tires had "fallen off the cliff" costing him massive time (first pit stop).
Safety car screwing him over costing him a place to Vettel cause hamilton to finish in 3rd.

Mal: First pit stop: Rear jack costing hamilton massive time.
2nd pit stop: Team taking very long to remove a piece of debris from front left suspension.

Chn: 5 place grid drop due to gear box failure

What's interesting to me, F1 don't even mention DRS, they talk about "innovative front wing", not rear wing.

/snip

It's linked to the DRS system: when the driver operates the Merc's DRS the rear wing element that flips up uncovers two small inlets in the rear wing assembly which route air through tubes in the chassis to the front wing, stalling it. They basically devised a means to duplicate the DRS system's intended function on both front and rear wings, dramatically cutting drag compared to everyone else. Hence fast with the DRS open, but only average with it closed...

Didn't watch qualifying this morning due to a power outage.

So i've downloaded the whole Qualifying session and am watching it now. Sky coverage is pretty amazing actually!

Awesome F1 racing today...shame about Kimi...everybody took a turn shafting him in one lap! Probably got that "I've just been gang-banged feeling" :D

Wow, some of the most exciting stuff ever!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to see we may have another car going for victory :D. No signs of slow race pace. O boy what a season. Vettel had a good drive and grosjean but wow the racing was just amazing.

Congrats to Rosberg for a great 1st win...awesome racing right through, can't wait to see Maldonado and Grosjean wheel-to-wheel again, those two seem to hate each other guts and don't mind banging it up!

Mark should start his own airline, Air Webber... :p

I'm in two minds about this race. Was exciting yes, thanks to McLarens pit-stop blunders and creating that massive train of Raikonen holding Button up and the rest, but those same blunders cost us a dual for the win. Can't take much from this race in terms of pace, Mercedes looked good at the start but ultimately McLaren gave them the race. Vettel did well to come away with a few points in the end, though to lady luck played into his hands... He really needs to step up his game

I doubt button could have won though, he was only 7 seconds ahead of rosburg when he pitted and would have been 13 seconds down. It would have been tough to pull that back i reckon but the pitstop did totally destroy any hope of a win but that is why f1 is a team game.

Look at shummi, he could have come second or perhaps even won but his mechanics let him down or machinery they used let them down but either way he has very little luck at the moment.

I am glad rosburg won though. He deserves a win, he always races hard and never moans like a little girl.

I missed the race (bowls event), and only saw the last turn. But I'm seriously missing everyone who told me how k@k the Mercedes would be :D
