I've never thought he's riding his father's coat tails... more like his uncle's coat tails... but barely hanging on

Michael Schumacher
First season: 1991 Position: 14th
Second season: 1992 Position: 3rd

Ralph Schumacher
First season: 1997 Position: 11th
Second season: Position: 10th

Mick Schumacher
First season: 2021 Position: 19th
Second season: 2022 Position: 15th
Michael only drove for 6 races in the 1991 season, hence the 14th place

There is a bit of context when you look at the teams they drove for in the formative parts of their careers.

Michael was driving for Benetton by his second race and Benetton were a great little race-winning team in the late-80s to the mid-90s, generally considered to be the ''best of the rest'' behind Williams, McLaren and Ferrari (often beating Ferrari), having never finished lower than 4th in the constructors since 1988. In today's context, it would be like entering F1 with McLaren. You could do a lot worse.

Ralf entered with Jordan, a solid midfield team.

Mick entered with Haas, who were essentially running a 2020-spec car last year with no development, a car which was one of the worst in 2020 and clearly the worst a year later.
Good points being made here. I also think the calibre of team is helping him lift his game. Let's be honest: if Mazepin and Latifi were in the same team neither would finish a race let alone get anywhere close to a point. KMag is being a positive influence imo

OK...because you seem unable to understand last year's car, there was no development on the Haas. Nothing, nada, zip, zero. So no points scored and Haas never expected to.
Sure, it has taken him a while to get going, but he has at least. Let's come back to this at the end of the season.

I also suspect you're not affay with sportsmen and their kids success after them? Maybe go check and see how many actually achieve the heights of their parents.

Not many successful parent child combo's in F1 that I can think of. Graham/Damon Hill and Gilles/Jacques Villeneuve. Can't think of other successful F1 parent child combos. It's probably more common in other sport codes that are "easier" to gain entry into?

No, not really. Peter Pollock and Shaun Pollock, yes. But Graeme Pollock's son didn't do much at FC level. Goes like this with a lot of other sports.

So the OP's a little misguided in his analysis of things.

and you could include Joss and Max Verstappen, Joss never won a championship and is better at managing his Son than he was himself, but he was an F1 driver so they still rank as a parent combo.

They all joined different teams and raced under different rules. Difficult to compare across eras. Mick arguably joined the second worst team who have made some major progress this year...
Yep, I was partly pointing out that making a claim of riding coat tails iust just doff.
He's not his father. Or his uncle for that matter.
He could well be a late bloomer who gets in with the right team some day and shows us what he's capable of with the right machinery.
He does not have nearly the same freedom his dad enjoyed from the start.
Haas is unlikely to be successful in this era competing with the likes of Merc, Ferrari and RB... unless Gene hires a bunch of RB engineers.

Bottom line is he will be unlikely to get anywhere in this sport without a team that can produce a winning or at least more driveable car.

There were a few other attempts... Scheckter, Piquet...
Just shows you how difficult it is to get into this sport. Only 20 odd spots and the Latifis and Strolls will always be warming one of those seats.

You do realise that he was signed up to Ferrari's Driver Academy programme. So guess where he would go if he showed promise?
And he's starting to do just that.

If you look at his F3 and F2 careers, he’s always come good in the second half of his second season. He’s about to start that going into the next race and does have some momentum now which will help motivate him (plus getting the points monkey off his back will also help).

But both Ferrari drivers are in it for the long term at the team based on their contracts for the moment so he’d have to wait a bit longer for a seat there.

For sure. I'd even think he might end up at Merc if Hamilton retired. Would LOVE to see Vettel in that car for one last shot at glory, but I know it won't happen.

I think he may still end up at Ferrari. I think Merc will try to get Charles to eventually replace Lewis, possibly for 2024 if he sees out his current contract. Toto has been talking him up recently. That would be the only big seat available in the next few years. I know he has a long term contract but there are break clauses in that we may not be aware of (like when Seb left RB for Ferrari).

If Lewis had to call it a day after this year, Seb would be a good stop gap.

Put Alonso there because that would be funnier.
