But they're hoping to make that back on US commercial rights and advertising. I'm sure they could sacrifice AlphaTauri.
It is just greed, really. Everybody has their cake.

I also don't see Red Bull sacrificing their feeder team any time soon.

Off on a tangent, F1s viewing popularity in the US took a dip this season and general interest looks to have stagnated from the highs of 2021. American sports fans do not like one-sided championships, it is why all their major leagues are structured with parity in mind and why NASCAR's format was altered to ensure a consistent driver cannot run away with the championship.

fantastic video talking about the same thing as Harlod_crick

but also sites sources and data and then talks about it.

am I enjoying the season personally? yes the development race and amazing strategy calls by other teams is making it entertaining for me.
but I am also bored at the same time by the Newy domination.

The 2021 season cost viewing popularity Globally not just in America, it did nothing for the sports reputation or the FIA's governance there of either.

season itself gained popularity.
finale dropped some. nett growth though.

2022 gained popularity until Ferrari remembered they were clowns. been going down steadily ever since then

Yeah, it's not like there isn't money being thrown at F1.

AppleTV is rumoured to have offered them $2 billion PER YEAR on a 7-yr deal starting in 2025 for the exclusive streaming rights!!!
F1TV on AppleTV would sell it for me. Nice. Let me guess tho - you have to push the 0s and 1s via a US VPN lol.

F1 Management should hire Newey as a consultant and lend him out to all teams on a roster like their windtunnel time... they get Newey time
But seriously, preventing development and limiting budgets mean teams who are behind the curve can't catch up, at least not as easily as in the past.

LOL. TV viewing works like this. What happens this year will have an effect for the viewing numbers next year.
Simple as that.
2008 Hamilton wins his first title. The decline in viewer numbers starts the next year(2009) and decline continues yearly.
2021 Verstappen win his first title. 2022 Highest viewing numbers since 2008.

It started long before then - peak was Schumacher's last championship year. That was before your time probably.

Regarding viewership trends, somebody on Reddit done some leg work in 2021 and provided their sources.

Merc dominance did not go down well. Viewership during the Vettel-Red Bull era was probably saved by the fact that 2010 & 2012 were competitive.

Checking the comments in the above thread, the 2018 spike was around the same time Liberty's influence started taking affect, notably F1s increased activity on YouTube and social media.

Michael Schumacher's championship year 2004 - 800 million.

Nobody's dominance goes down well, just look at today's viewership trend. The same happened under Vettel and Schumacher.

2013 was a significant drop.

Too many factors, but yes, dominance by one team is not good for the interest in the sport for sure.

I don't know if its solely dominance necessarily either. Sport in general has exploded over the past 2 decades creating plenty of competition for viewers. Also, most countries hosted F1 on their primary public TV channels in earlier years and that was abandoned in favour of media rights for niche and paid broadcasters. That meant more money for broadcasting rights but less eyeballs.

F1 occupies a niche market, though. It does not compete against anything else.

The only other regular, global motorsport series it may split viewers with is MotoGP and even then, if they are run on the same weekend, they will offset their starts so as to not clash. In the past FIM would swap the Moto2 and MotoGP start times, moving MotoGP earlier to make sure the big boys do not clash with F1 because they know they would lose a head-to-head clash over viewership.
