I understand if the TEAM says do XYZ and then it screws one driver over, then they say ok swop the positions back to be fair.

But a pitstop problem is NOT the drivers fault. You'll notice the lights on the wheel gun, the driver cannot move until those wheel guns register the correct torque that was put onto the wheel nut, if correct the wheel guns lights go green and it sends a signal to the car, when all 4 are green the driver gets a green light to go! This gun said nope, incorrect torque try again.

This was a pitstop problem so lets screw Oscar.... Lando = poor sportsmanship
I didn't follow the radio messages closely. Did Lando ask for the position back, or did it come from the pit wall?

I did hear them saying Piastri won't undercut him which is then in effect what happened, albeit due to a slow stop not a fast out lap.

In the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix (held on July 21, 2024), McLaren's pit stops were central to the race's drama and outcome, ultimately enabling a 1-2 finish for the team but sparking controversy over strategy and team orders.

Key Events Involving McLaren's Pit Stops

  • Race Context: Lando Norris started on pole, with teammate Oscar Piastri in second. Piastri got the better launch and led into Turn 1, while Norris dropped to third (briefly regaining second after Max Verstappen was ordered to return a position gained by going off-track). Piastri maintained the lead through the first stint, with Norris closing the gap in second.
    • Second Round of Stops (Laps 45-47):
      • With Lewis Hamilton (third) on fresh mediums after pitting on Lap 40 and closing in (down to about 25 seconds behind Norris), McLaren opted to pit Norris first on Lap 45 for mediums. This was a defensive move to cover Hamilton's undercut threat and avoid potential issues if both McLarens pitted simultaneously (a "double-stack" that could cost time or risk errors under pressure).
      • Norris emerged in the lead, ahead of Piastri (who pitted two laps later on Lap 47 for mediums and rejoined in second, about 2-3 seconds behind).
      • The stops were executed cleanly (no wheel nut or mechanical problems), but the staggered timing inadvertently swapped the drivers' order. Piastri had led most of the race, but Norris now benefited from fresher tires and track position.

      • The Controversy and Team Orders
    • Over the final 20+ laps, McLaren repeatedly instructed Norris via radio to let Piastri pass, emphasizing it was the "fair" outcome since Piastri had led from the start and the swap was due to strategy, not on-track action. Norris resisted initially, citing his championship fight (he was 84 points behind Verstappen) and asking for clarity on why the team didn't pit Piastri first. Tensions peaked with Norris saying things like, "I know what I'm going to do," while his engineer urged him to consider the team's 1-2 priority.
    • Norris finally yielded on Lap 68 (of 70), slowing to allow Piastri through for his maiden F1 win. Norris finished second, securing McLaren's first 1-2 since the 2021 Italian GP.
    • Post-race, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella defended the pit strategy as necessary to protect the result (e.g., avoiding a Hamilton or Verstappen undercut that could drop one driver out of the top two), but admitted the team could have communicated better pre-race to avoid the radio drama. Norris later said he always planned to comply but regretted not swapping sooner to reduce controversy, while Piastri praised the team's execution despite the "complicated" end.
This was just the team trying to be fair I think.

Team told Lando to box, he said no pit Oscar first... Team then told Oscar to pit and it was normal, then Lando pitted and it was a slow stop which put Oscar in front of him.

Seems the strategy team takes orders from Lando now, I think he was renamed the new CEO last week, makes sense.

When both drivers are so far ahead you let them race. No need to decide what's fair.

The time for team orders was last year, when Norris was the clear contender. Maintaining a bias would have been more understandable.

They really don't seem to get it...

Ok, now try answering my question.

Yeah I agree. Oscar's point was valid when he asked them if a slow pit stop is not just part or racing.

Just remember that

not all F1 pit messages are broadcast to the public; broadcasts of team radio transmissions are curated selections of noteworthy conversations, with the majority of the communication remaining private and inaccessible to fans. The F1 management (FOM) reviews the encrypted transmissions from all teams and selects interesting snippets to air during the broadcast to enhance the fan experience and create drama.

What a great race, wasn't falling asleep halfway like many other races.
Red Bull fastest car this race? Yeah right, Yuki in 13th.
Just Max's brilliance to take off all the aero and still can handle it through the corners.
Geez how did Bearman get the penalty?
If Ferrari can't even get a podium at Monza, there is no hope.
At least the Sir did better as there was little cornering and just keep straight and foot flat mostly.
A great race? Maybe I was watching something else. boring as hell.

Whether the McLaren position swopping is fair or not (in this race and previously), it just makes the final outcome feel tainted and manipulated.

Even the commentators said "Who said you cant overtake at Monza"
Overtakes yes but few and far between. No overtakes in the top 5 later in the race. Max winning by almost 20 secs and the other cars spaced by sizeable margins amongst them looked a procession rather than a race. No rain or even a Safety car to liven things up.

I can't deal with a stupid person on Monday, you watched the race and listened to the radio calls as well as saw what happened.. but here you are trying to be dumb

come back on say Wednesday
So attack the guy, rather than answer the question? What part of wanting to know who initiated the switch do you find offensive?

Not sure what's wrong with the street circuit that was an option.

Shutting down CT streets for weeks on end isn't exactly feasible

Not sure what's wrong with the street circuit that was an option.

The e-circuit is hardly enough to run a proper F1 event. Firstly, we use the city and roads and the required infrastructure needed for an F1 street circuit isn't feasible. CT is the right place to host an F1 event. Hope to see it happen.

Err… Lando let Piastri box first because there was no chance of undercut. Piastri benefitted from putting first, it wasn’t Lando telling the team what to do. Bias is strong with this one.

Piastri didn't benefit from pitting nor putting first, as you put it

Lando had a pitstop mess up. That's racing

The swap was bs
