Vettel facing gearbox penalty at Japanese GP

Sebastian Vettel is facing a potential five-place grid penalty at Suzuka following a “completely unnecessary” accident in the wake of Sunday’s Malaysian GP.

Vettel was involved in a bizarre crash with Lance Stroll as the Ferrari picked up rubber on his tyres on his slow down lap after the chequered flag.

The rear left of Vettel’s car was smashed meaning the German is likely to need a new gearbox ahead of this weekend’s Japanese GP.

And, given that his existing gearbox has not completed the required six events, that means a five-place penalty.

Ugh... Take the penalty. These endurance elements in F1 have been spoiling the championship battle...and Alonso's career :D

More like the gearbox will reappear from the Ferrari factory completely undamaged and Jean Todt will have personally [-]covered up[/-] inspected the tamper seals and declared all is in order :whistle:.
 
After examining video evidence the stewards determined neither driver could be considered ‘wholly or predominantly to blame’.

“On the approach to Turn 5 during the slow down lap after the end of the race, Car 18 (STR) was towards the middle of the track, Car 8 (GRO) was closing from behind on the inside of Car 18 and at the same time, Car 5 (VET) overtook Car 18 on the outside and in doing so, turned in slightly towards the apex of Turn 5,” read the official FIA report.

“Simultaneously Car 18 was moving slight away from the apex. This resulted in contact between the left rear tyre of Car 5 and the right front tyre of Car 18.”

If Vettel wants to turn left into the path of oncoming cars it is his own fault if he takes a grid penalty......
Driving a Red car and crying Foul on the radio no longer counts for more than the truth.
 
Not to defend Vettel, but I think this thing of immediately crying over the radio is purely for the race control's benefit. It's almost encouraged. I think it was the Ocon / Saintz incident that made me think. The team was almost prompting Ocon to say something after their collision so that they could appear the innocent party. It's like it's a case now that if you're in an incident and you don't bitch and moan over the radio, you're basically admitting guilt.
 
Sebastian Vettel looks set to avoid a gearbox penalty this weekend, after analysis by Ferrari showed his current one was not damaged in his crash with Lance Stroll in Malaysia.

Vettel had feared a five-place grid drop for this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix, after he collided with Stroll on the slow down lap at Sepang.

The impact with the Williams was quite severe and there were doubts that the gearbox could have escaped unscathed.

Any change would have resulted in a costly penalty - with no grounds for Ferrari to be granted any exemption because of force majeure.

Ferrari flew Vettel's gearbox back to its Maranello factory this week for a closer examination and team sources have indicated that it has been given the all-clear.

The team will therefore fit the gearbox as scheduled on Saturday morning at Suzuka for final free practice, with that hour-long run enough to give confirmation that everything is in order prior to qualifying.

So flown to the Ferrari factory for “inspection”?

Let’s hope they’ve missed something and it chews itself up and gets spat out the exhaust around lap 20 on Sunday...

To be fair, the inspection would have likely involved connecting it up to test it and test the electronics. Provided the seal is intact, perfectly legit. For the sake of the championship race, as much as i want to see Hamilton win another one, I'm thinking it's time for a DNF for the Merc. We need another nailbiter at the end like Hamilton's win two years ago.

I think you might not have seen the on board camera from a car behind the two of them... Stroll clearly moved to the right into Vettel...
Hopefully all of them learn from this, as some drivers go reaaaaly slow and some just want to get out of the car asap.

And Vettel moved into the path of Stroll. It wasn't a once sided affair. Even the FIA agree.
He wasn't at fault at Malaysia either, but he would probably have done it differently in hindsight.
I doubt he would have cut across Stroll's nose like that had he known he wasn't expected. He would have definitely taken a wider berth. Nothing illegal, but some fault for both of them IMO. Probably more Stroll for moving across without looking to the right and assuming nobody would be overtaking.

‘Vettel's gearbox is good for Japan’


Formula One title contender Sebastian Vettel was given some good news on Wednesday after his Ferrari team ruled out a gearbox change that would have incurred a grid penalty at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The German, a four-time world champion, is 34 points behind Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton with five races remaining, including Sunday's at Suzuka.

The gearbox scare followed a bizarre incident after last Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix when his car was hit from behind by Canadian Lance Stroll's Williams on the post-race slowing down lap.

The impact wrecked the car's rear suspension.

A change of gearbox would have meant a five place grid penalty for a race that Vettel needs to win, but Ferrari gave the all-clear after a factory inspection.

"The gearbox #Seb5 (Vettel) used in #MalaysiaGP is still available," they said on Twitter (@ScuderiaFerrari).

Nope, you’re wrong, and the new footage released shows it’s 100% Vettel at fault.

New footage of Sebastian Vettel's collision with Lance Stroll after the Malaysia GP has emerged and been published by Sky Sports F1.

The fresh camera angles, which were not available for examination by the Sepang stewards when they investigated the crash, are from on-board Stroll's Williams car and seemingly exonerate the teenager from blame - while asking fresh questions about Vettel's post-race manoeuvre.

The footage shows that Stroll maintains a consistent turn through Turn Five at Sepang and then sharpened his steering angle away from the overtaking Vettel when the Ferrari drew up alongside him.

Analysing the new pictures at the Skypad with Sky F1 colleague Anthony Davidson, Johnny Herbert concluded: "Sebastian has effectively driven into him."

A concurring Davidson added: "One thing that is for sure is that Stroll isn't to blame at all, we can conclude that from the new footage."

The Malaysia GP stewards ruled that 'no driver was wholly or predominantly to blame for the incident and will therefore take no further action'.

It is understood the new footage was only able to be retrieved once Formula One Management gained physical access to the camera which had been on-board Stroll's car in Malaysia.

Seriously, how could that be Sebs fault ffs, when you see how far to the right Stroll was anyway. I mean he was in the inside

I'm trying hard to understand, how this was Vettels fault, if you look at this. So much space on the left of Stroll, but look where he is. He knocks into Seb, before Seb is even in front of him

Right after the crash, the car that follows Stroll, clearly shows that he should have been further to the left. When he reaches that left hander, he is not even turning left

Maybe watch the video a few more times, Vettel comes around at speed and hits the side of Stroll’s car, this is supposed to be the cool down lap and Vettel was reckless in his manner of overtaking and speed and coincidentally all the experts (outside Ferrari) now agree...
