Yesterday couldn't have gone much worse for McLaren and Honda, but does the sprightly appearance of the MCL32 this morning mean the team can expect more sustained running today?

But from our man down in the pit lane it would appear that Vandoorne's install lap hasn't gone entirely to plan, with mechanics having to push the car back to the garage.

Remember, it was on Alonso's opening lap yesterday that the problems began for McLaren and Honda...

Here we go - teenage rookie Lance Stroll is ready for his first official lap in a Formula 1 car.

Williams were a surprise performer yesterday, with Felipe Massa just 0.3s off the benchmark.

Honda confirmed late last night that the problem which rendered Fernando Alonso inactive for seven hours last night was 'related to the shape of the 2017 oil tank.

So perhaps we shouldn't be entirely surprised that the MCL32 has already hit problems this morning.

Reshaping an oil tank is no easy fix after all.
 
Whatever trouble McLaren had seems to have cleared, as Vandoorne heads out of the pits. Giovinazzi also back on track for Sauber, and Stroll in the Williams.

Only he and Hamilton have set times quick enough to be registered.
Many of those on track are travelling down the pit lane before rejoining the circuit.
 
Instead of running a Mercedes-affiliated driver today, Sauber are instead running a Ferrari-affiliated one after the Scuderia's new third driver Antonio Giovinazzi was drafted in to cover for the convalescing Pascal Wehrlein.

Wehrlein is in Barcelona with Sauber, incidentally, and the team remain optimistic he will be fit to make his debut for the team in next week's second and final test.

Meantime, Giovinazzi's two days of running this week present the Italian with a chance to showcase his own credentials. Just one out lap on the board for the GP2 race winner so far.
 
P1 FOR STROLL
The rookie goes four tenths faster than Hamilton, but yesterday's times still aren't being troubled.
A 1:26.450 for Stroll.
Now Stroll sets a 1m26.089s, going 0.745s clear of Hamilton.
 
Our first sight of Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari.

The Scuderia were very impressive on Day One, running long and running fast. It's still very, very early days but so far so good...
 
RED FLAG:

Forty minutes into the session and we have our first red flag - for the Williams of Lance Stroll, who appears to have spun on the circuit.

Green Again:

He's managed to get back going again and is on his way back to the pits, with the green flags showing again.
 
A STRANGE ONE FOR STROLL...
He was on the escape road just on the exit of the fast turn nine, but facing the wrong way.
We can't see any visible marks on the tarmac or neighbouring gravel trap.
Either way, he completed a three-point turn and was able to get going again.
 
nd Lance Stroll isn't alone in taking an early-morning spin (of the wrong kind). Another debutant, Ferrari third driver Antonio Giovinazzi, standing in for the injured Pascal Wehrlein at Sauber, has also ended up looking the wrong way...
 
RED BULL FAMILY ON TRACK
Both Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso send their cars out.
Verstappen and Kvyat on track.

Max Verstappen leaps up to P1 with a 1:25.626, whilst Daniil Kvyat goes fourth by setting a 1:34.684.
Verstappen setting purple sector again...

Verstappen down to 1:24.794.
Kvyat on a 1:32.200.

McLaren says Vandoorne encountered some set-up niggles after the second installation lap, but it's nothing major and after a few tweaks should be back out on track shortly.
 
Vandoorne's stint on track is short-lived, the Belgian is back in the pits. Seven laps down but still no time for McLaren-Honda after nearly an hour of running.
 
HAMILTON BACK OUT
Kvyat whittles his time down to a 1:28.616 before pitting.
Hamilton is now lapping and the only man out there.
P1 FOR HAMILTON!
Purple second and third sectors see Hamilton jump to first place with a 1:24.026.
Raikkonen also improves with a 1:24.867 to go third.
RAIKKONEN UP TO P2
Hamilton set a purple first sector, but returned to the pits.
Raikkonen set a purple second sector and duly moved up to second place. A 1:24.610 for the Finn.
P1 FOR RAIKKONEN!
He likes that second sector!
Another 'purple' middle sector and personal bests in the other two sectors put the Finn top. 1:23.718.
