Lol, those were the days. Tho I suspect it was very elitist, and if you opened it up to the genpop today you'd have a (very colorful) text version of Facebook within a week.
Our family uses Facebook to keep in touch with overseas family/friends quite effectively. My mom of 78 years are able to interact with her children in Europe & New Zeeland, keeping is close.
The problem isn't the platform, it's the people.
