Facebook security slip-up

 hopefully /me is not interesting enough for identity thieves to take note of :D

So why would revealing your birth day be a security risk?

I dont know, unless you're a women, then there will be hell to pay...

On the other hand = Facebook has your name, location and birthdate, snap crackle and pop you identity has been stolen :)

Oh boy...

Ag, I'm never really bothered by these type of security problems.

Wanna be gdiza?
Go for it... pay my debt while you're at it ;)

lets say your name is Joe Soap, your email is [email protected] and your DOB is 24/July/1979.

And then lets say that you are that 41% of users that has this information exposed on your facebook profile to the world.

Freewebmail might only require you to enter your DOB to do a password reset for a specific email address thereby giving someone access to all your personal email (this could include your banking details and passwords... etc...) and I have seen many services over the years that ask you for 1 little bit of trivia to re-gain access in the event that you forget your password.

This was completely hypothetical and only 1 example but you get the idea...

Ever call your credit card company or bank? One of the first level security checks is "please confirm your date of birth, sir".

they wont do shyte without id number thats for sure

they wont accept changing anything because you know their birth date

this seems like a whole lot of crap over seeing someone's birthdate

Nope, I never deal with money matters over the phone. Far to many people have my birth day as it is. My schools I went to, Varsity has my full ID number, so does SAA when I booked that flight. Government when I got my ID book and passport, insurance, medical aid. Anyone that has ever asked to see my ID or drivers license.

Birth date is a weak method of security.

I placed a call to my bank last week and there's no way in 'ell you're getting even simple info from them unless they've verified every detail under the sun about you that they have on record.

Well i see that new.facebook.com can't be accessed anymore...

lol @ ppl actually putting in true info on FB

This is just rude , Now everyone knows the womans real ages pfft. How is this a 'big' breach of security ? They gonna hack you through your DOB ? :( /me hides

Talking about info required for accessing certain services, my ISP asks for random details for verification (from the form I filled in when registering with them), such as postal address, ID number, my phone number, etc..
