Facebook users 'buying fake friends'

And the human race reaches a new all-time low. How sad do you have to be to buy friends in order to make yourself look popular? Completely ridiculous how much society has degraded. I try and keep the number of Facebook friends to a minimum - don't want every Tom, Dick & Harry to see random things.

They are spending £125 for blocks of 1,000 friends on Facebook and Twitter.

The virtual friends are being sold by a small Australian company called uSocial.

Leon Hill, its 24-year-old chief executive, reported a surge of inquiries about his service over Christmas.

He told The Sun: "Social networking sites can be cruel if you're unloved – they show exactly how popular you are.

"People are buying pals so they have more mates to chat to, rather than sitting alone on their PCs."

However, many claim the service abuses the principles of social networking sites.

One objector, who set up a website leanbhill.com, wrote: "uSocial utilises armies of dummy accounts on social networking websites to cheat and promote content on behalf of its clients.

"In other words, uSocial violates online communities for money. This is shameful and deplorable.

"It exploits the assumption of trust and goodwill that allows internet communities to thrive."

Lawyers for Facebook have also tried to get the service shut down.

Yeah that is true Gary... some people just like to be your friends when it is convenient and then don't talk to you for the rest of the year.
 
I get so many friend requests for people I don't know why would you ever want to buy friends?

Do these friends actually talk back and post stuff on your wall and so forth, or do you end up with 1000 gimp mofo's
 
Lol, I can't even see how this would work. If my mate suddenly had 10 000 friends I would ask questions!!

Anyway, for me Facebook is about keeping touch with friends and family who don't check their email often enough so I couldn't care less about the number of "friends" that I have:rolleyes:
 
I think the main purpose of this is for spamming people.

If all you want is a bigger friends list all you have to do it add loads of random people. Many people just accept friends requests without question.

Personally I don't want people I don't know in my friends list, even if it means having a small friends list :o
 
I personally use facebook for networking. Some prefer having a small list, others like having a large list.

I have many "friends" on facebook, but only 2% of them I'd actually consider good/close friends. Facebook has its pro's and con's, it's what you do with it that counts.

Also buying facebook friends is LAME. If you want to get many friends, just add people you know and then sift through their list for the most mutual friends. Instant friends list.
