"But Fallout 76 is in fact an online survival RPG that’s heavily inspired by games like DayZ and Rust, according to three people familiar with the project."

Wonder if its dis-information, seems plausible tho

Those people, speaking anonymously so as not to damage their careers, confirmed that Fallout 76 is an experimental new entry in the longrunning post-apocalyptic series.

Meh, that is what Square Enix wants to do with Deus Ex...

Not to mention that Bethesda has already tested survival and base building mechanics in Fallout 4 which was applauded by the larger target market. I guess this gave them the opporunitity to branch the game out.

Back in the day, they did the same with Fallout 1/2 when they brought out Fallout Tactics which was already using existing Fallout game mechanics, but to compete with the new tactical role-playing genre imposed by Japan on the US and EU market.

All-in-all, this may be a good cash cow next to The Elder Scrolls Online... I doubt the traditional RPG in Fallout and The Elder Scrolls will be gone anytime soon, its the essence.

If it funds a better and bigger Fallout 5 i'm all for it :-)

I would prefer they release Elder Scrolls 6 already.

The world does not need another cash grab mmo

This will entirely depend on their priorities. Any MMO-type game is a long-term development, it needs to be patched, maintained and expanded to keep the interest going which completely relies on participating player numbers and in-game purchases/subscriptions.

Happily, Bethesda applied the microtransaction model (with, a-hem, optional subscriptions) as The Elder Scrolls Online was introduced with a subscription model only which they later abandoned. I guess Fallout 76 will also be buy-to-play with microtransactions and optional subscriptions.

Personally, I have nothing against cosmetic microtransactions and purchasable expansions, however, DLC must be value-adding in my opinion.

Say this works and Bethesda is having great success with Fallout 76, don’t expect an innovative Fallout 5 anytime soon, publishers tend to sub the development out when they change their priorities… so yah.

Who knows, maybe Fallout 76 will spawn a greater single-player Fallout RPG series, maybe Fallout 76 may have a story-inspiring quest system catering towards the single players and clans (quest groups) alike. It all depends on the vision Fallout 76 may have… how they will execute, well, we will have to see.

They announced back in 2016 that they are busy developing The Elder Scrolls 6, but that two other 'big' developments will be produced alongside and will be released prior to The Elder Scrolls 6. I guess Fallout 76 is one, the other one... who knows. They also said that The Elder Scrolls 6 will not be released anytime soon.

Likely working on a new engine. A lot of criticism Fallout 4 received was the dated engine.
Same can be said about Elder Scrolls really.

Here's hoping they bring Obsidian back if they ever release another single player Fallout

I'm kinda tired of fallout as it is.
Sunk many hours into 3 and 4, this might be interesting

settlement maintenance and building forts killed fallout 4 for me, they would have been better off sticking to the basics like they did in new vegas. ah man i miss new vegas now

Elder Scrolls has made me hate the Fallout franchise.

I'd ordinarily like the games much more, but I truly resent that they delay Elder Scrolls. Skyrim released in 2011 ffs.
