Tower finally identifies as "3G & HSDPA Enabled" but can only get a GPRS signal from it in dual-mode. Did Vodacom upgrade the tower without installing the software or is it the other way around.

Question: Is the coverage map on the Vodacom site updated? If so, then I'm still out of luck! My celphone (Nokia 6822, thus not a 3G phone) also has the message "3G & HSDPA enabled", but looking at the map my street is not covered! :( Funny thing is, the dolomite mine across from Botha avenue shows full 3G coverage! ****! Since when do rocks need coverage, and people not?

When can I expect to have coverage?

Could be a mismatch in the 2G / 3G coverage, i.e. you're seeing the cell broadcast from a 2G cell thats bigger than the 3G cell in the area. So you see the cell broadcast but only get the 2G signal.

Why can't us Afrikaners not have coverage as well? And we are 'people', you know.....

Just kidding!

PM me your exact addy and I'll ask. Also include an e-mail, if you don't mind.

:confused: Don't you mean I'm seeing the cell broadcast from a 3G cell that's bigger than the 2G cell in the area?
Anyways, it switched back to "Dalview-3". I guess I still have to set my phone to 3G only :(

So basically I got a cell broadcast from a 3G tower which 3G coverage didn't extend far enough to cover me. Back on 3G now from Location area 68 & Cell identifier 7092161 (NetMonitor)

So I take it HSDPA has a smaller effective radius than 3G? If so does this mean more towers need to be erected?

The frequencies are the same for HSDPA and 3G, so the cell should be the same size, BUT; remember the coding is much more complex and therefore more prone to interference which means the footprint could be smaller.

So, a HSDPA cell can appear smaller than a 3G cell, than a 2G cell.

There will need to be more 3G towers than 2G.

Hi Guys
I just got this from Vodacom :

"In order to reward our loyal and high usage customers, Vodacom will offer all subscribers who have been on a data package (either as a tariff plan or an add-on) for 9 months or more, the option to upgrade to a new HSDPA data card.

The above option will be subject to the average value of data revenue generated per month over the last 3 consecutive months.

The cost to the customer for the above option, is as follows:

Average monthly data revenue, inclusive of VAT||Number of months on data package||Cost to customer for upgrade to new HSDPA card

R500 or less||12 or more||R500
R501 to R1 000||12 or more||R250
R1 001 to R2 500||9-12 months||R250
R1 001 to R2 500||12 or more||Free
R 2500 or more||9 months or more||Free"

So basically, if you were an early adopter, and are on a 1GB/month package, you can upgrade to HSDPA for R250.
Cheers ~

ScrnScrm, won't you PM or mail me the complete communication you received?

v3g

I swaped out my card for the new one, removed the software and loaded the new one. The data card crashes and gives me a message that the sim is not ready.
Dash version is 6.03.0002

Any ideas?

Sounds related to Rpm's problem. Could you tell us the laptop you're using if you're not using the router option. The problem laptop was a Dell Latitude D 510.

Bugger. Thought we were on to something. Makes one think, maybe Rpm's problem is just a loose connection somewhere.

rpm took his notebook back to Dell to check it out. One of the Vodacom techies visited rpm and they could not get the card working, although we have the exact same laptop in the lap working.

v3g, you says 128kb/s at the moment, does this mean it may be up'd? Does that require a new card or firmware only? Me getting excited about that prospect

p.s. swopped out card yesterday, was a pleasure at the store, and uninstall software, installed new software and worked first time. As seamless as could be for me, so I am not complaining :-)
