Farm Attacks

Underberg farmer robbed‚ beaten in two-day ordeal after attackers use tractor to ram

An elderly Underberg farmer who was bound and beaten over two days by a gang of farm attackers is fighting for his life in a Pietermaritzburg Hospital.

The bloodied body of 79-year-old Trevor Rees was discovered by employees on his farm Pudsey‚ on the outskirts of the southern Drakensburg village early on Monday.

The attackers are believed to have stormed his home on Friday night‚ kicking down a door after first using a tractor to ram a hole in his bedroom wall.

Rees‚ a timber farmer who lived alone‚ was subdued‚ beaten and left on his bedroom floor‚ only to have his attackers return a day later and viciously assault him again.

The attack on Rees is the second violent farm robbery in the area in less than a week.

Last week farmer Gavin Carter was gunned down in his home by three men in an apparent robbery on his farm West Ilsley.

Berg Protection’s Brett Deavin said that paramedics had rushed to Rees’ home on Monday morning after one of his workers had raised the alarm.

“We found him still bound on the floor with blood everywhere. It looks like these guys first tried to ram down the wall with a tractor. When that failed they kicked in a door and managed to get a hold of him‚” he said.

“They beat him badly and tied his arms behind his back with electrical wire. They managed to get into his safe and took some money and other valuables before leaving‚” Deavin added.

He said that Rees had told medics that his attackers returned a day later.

^ And still people will say its just normal crime, it happens to everybody, don't worry about it or don't make any noise because that's racist.

Roff area you live in.

Yea my mom and her husband went through that last year (no deaths, just the ransacking tie up, kicking and all and all).
About 800m from where we live.

Majority of the time it's petty things like stock theft or car batteries and the likes. Small things. But this is now the second attack in 12 months. I'm blessed in the fact that I'm about 500m off the Pretoria road and about 4 Km from VD Hoff so I'm off the main points of quick getaways. It just doesn't mean I'm not in danger, but slightly less so than the people closer to Vd Hoff and Pretoria road. It's getting better and then this happens and puts all the sector's work back a few years again...

Convinced they hit an area, move to next area etc but also often within first year of someone moving in.

There was another robbery on Friday night(not a farm) next to Drak Gardens Resort where 5 BM locked the couple up in their strong room and only got out Saturday morning...no injuries luckily

Farm torture suspects remanded in custody

Two men accused of the murder of Underberg farmers Trevor Rees and Gavin Carter will spend a week behind bars before their formal bid for bail. The suspects‚ arrested in connection with the murders‚ will return to the dock on February 20.

Trevor Rees was attacked by a gang of men on his farm Pudsey last week and died after several days in the Edendale hospital.

He had been shot twice in the attack and had survived an entire weekend before he was discovered‚ bloodied and bound‚ by an employee who arrived back at his farm after a pay weekend.

It later emerged that Rees had been viciously tortured‚ made to drink bleach and attacked with pliers.

Aye, have to rebuild those walls to stop tractors now...

I honestly get the same thought when I read posts like this...

There is just so much you can do. You can build yourself into Fort Knox and if they want in they will get in. Security is not the answer. It helps, but it's not the answer or the solution.

I'd love to hear the solution that isn't years away, beside leaving SA...

What? Put up more beams? Get more dogs? Have 3 safe rooms?

A robust close community with lightning reaction times drives away such elements. All the security in the world can not make your house safe. There as just too many variables. And exactly why they monitor a target for weeks on end. Best solution currently is a community united and have no fear of rushing to a neighbor's aid. This coupled with security. But saying, up security? ...

Well, what is in your control?

And when I say up security of course includes community, aka "call for backup", duh

What they do not tell you in the articles : They beat up the man and took turns raping the wife, they forced the man to watch.

I know this for a fact, because it is my uncle and his wife.

So sorry to hear. :(

I hope they find them and put them face down in a shallow grave.
