%$#&

I was chilling on Monday night with two mates, leveling my hunter (yes I play wow) when my phone rings at like 12:30am  .... was the SO... Good friend of hers who is married with two lighties, shot on her family farm. Dead, just like that...

She was beside herself, never heard her like that before. I had to rush over.

I didnt really know her, I hadnt met her. Only heard her voice like once, and her one lighties voice. Its left me with quite a bitter taste in my mouth, and prompted some googling on these farm killings that are happening around south africa.

Can someone tell me, what the %$#& is going on in this country of ours? And why the government seems to ignore the whole thing? It hasn't even been reported on the news. I have checked all over, and cant find anything. Its not like someone stole a sweet from a shop, this woman was shot on her knees

I just dont know anymore... :(

I think your anger is justified but you need to ask yourself the question;
How many murders do you think take place daily that go unreported in the news?

I think the powers that be try suppress this sort of tragedy in order to keep peace, shone away questions, keep the stats low and to evade the ultimate question about hate killings!!

So sad and I think you need to advise your local papers in order to get the powers that be to react in the way we pay them to and to hopefully present swift justice.

I agree your anger is justified. Alert your local newspaper. The higher profile the case the better chance they have of catching the bastards and throwing them to bubba. Won't bring back the little lighties mommy but it might make the next guy think twice.

Try not get wound into the farm murder stuff on the net. There's a lot of politically/racist motivated disinformation out there that try make it seem much worse than it is. Not that it could be any worse for your SO's friend and family.

Dude are you only realizing now that there are 50 odd murders a day in this country?

Has it taken a farm murder to get your attention? It amazes me how farm murders seem to be way more important, big outcry when someone on a farm dies but do any of you read or care about the other murders? Why are farm murders so much worse?

Granted it's a horrible story but there are 50 horrible stories a day and farm murders make up a tiny percentage yet they are always the most shocking to people.

Maybe because, as the heading says, it is personal. Too close to home.

Farm murders gets more attention because people care more about it, and are in a position to make noise about it. Also, farmers had always been isolated and pretty much on their own, and that was why they had the commandos to look after rural areas. Disbanding the commandos was one of biggest mistakes the government made in terms of rural safety. Now, they are just easy targets, and government in general do not help the situation at all.

We know where some people always like to try and take it when farm murders occur. So let's quickly deal with the facts. According to the T.A.U there have been on average 50-70 farm murders a year since 1990. Last year there were around 36. These are farm murders of all races. That means of the 400 000 murders since 1990 around 1200 have been farmers (of all ethnic groups). So one in 333 people who were murdered lived on a farm. Last year for every 1 person living on a farm murdered 400 people who didn't were in fact murdered so the rate is going down. Many of those murders came at the hands of known acquaintances/spouses etc.

Of course none of this matters or is of any comfort to the loved one of the lady mentioned above. It would appear although theft was a motive, the killing of the lady was gratuitous and unnecessary and we have to assume there was an aspect of hate involved. If indeed hate is a motive behind so many farm killings (although only 2% of "attacks" result in violence) society should sit down and debate what is the root cause of this hatred. To throw curses across the table from group to group just fuels the fire. Again I don't mean to be callous in the shadow of your SO's loss, but sometimes straight after a tragedy is the best time to call for cool heads.

It's about 30 murders a day. Small point since 1 murder is 1 too many but the rate has gone down over the years

It's 40 murders a day. 14 800 /365 = 40.5.

who knows what it is, could be 30 could be 70 but my concern with farm murders is that people go on about hatred and genocide but ignore that farm murders make up a small percentage and the same people who claim genocide and hatred cannot explain why blacks are killing blacks but 20-40 black deaths a day is never considered genocide, let one farm murder happen and well it's genocide.

I never understand why farm murders are hatred and genocide but the slaughter of black folk is not considered the same. I guess black on black murder is not genocide. 36 farmers killed last year, let's say 9000 black folk killed last year but farm murders are genocide, the black murders well ummm errrr no idea what that is. Normal criminal activity.

Farmer deaths = No food for the country.
So farm murders should take priority.

I think it's just a matter of people not having the facts. There are websites out there that are very active in spreading distortions. One is called censorbugbear and this is the same source people like Steve Hoffmeyer and ilk quote. The facts on that site are extremely and blatantly wrong. Firstly they claim there are 3800 farm murders of white "boers" alone since 1994. Now that at first glance does sound shocking. Especially if you believe their claim that there are 14 000 farmers left in South Africa. They make other claims like farming in S.A is the most dangerous profession in the world etc which are all nonsense.

The list they provide has only around 1200 names of people murdered on farms and even in the list most are from cities, many are not white, some are not even murdered when you follow up the sources and many are before 1994. The 14 000 farmers number is complete rubbish. According to the T.A.U and various agricultural boards there are 39 000 Commercial FARMS alone in South Africa. Just counting maize farms there are 11 000 of them. There are a further 200 000 small holdings that practice farming. It's obviously not true each farm has one person living on it.

So to determine if people are being killed on farms I suggest we work out the murder rate to be something like 1200 people murdered since 1994 equals 66 a year. A conservative estimate of the number of people who live on farms is 10 per farm and 4 per small holding. Making around 1 200 000 (1 point 2 million people). So the murder rate for farmers over the period can be estimated at 5.5 per 100 000. For the general population it's currently 34 per 100 000 but averages out closer to 40 per 100 000 over the same peroid of time.

So the fact is it's far safer to be a farmer than general member of the public. So "genocide" is indeed far too strong a term....but !

There definitely are cases of people being killed on farms motivated by racial hatred. People killing people in the townships probably have some inter personal reason. On farms there have been very violent murders that appear motivated by race or some deep hatred (even when things have been stolen) and we do need an inquiry to see what is fueling this. Are farmers mistreating their staff ? Is there some agenda to scare farmers off their land ? What belies the issue ?

But I agree that calling it genocide belittles the real issues and muddies the waters.

Fair enough but why is it black people are murdered violently? Does that also show some deep hatred?

Most murders don't make news even if the person was gang raped, beaten and slaughtered. Look at that girl who was raped and had her eye removed. Was that hatred or race? It was black on black crime though so it's normal criminal activity. Had that been a farm girl and i can only imagine how that story would have exploded into racism and hatred but it was a black person so normal everyday life in SA.

How is that normal?
Do you just assume that people think it is normal because it was "black on black" violence?

Violence in general is a problem is SA. Why kill someone if you simply want money? Surely you must realize that by letting the guy live, you can potentially rob him again. Is it really that the average criminal is so stupid, or is life so cheap and the need for stuff so great that killing is the obvious choice?
