Hi all,

I am looking for a internet connection that i can supply to about 40 offices in an office block.

I am looking for the following:
  • Decent speed which i can split between each office using a server.
  • Preferably fixed line.
  • Uncapped.

Could you please post some info on my options.

Regards

Gyno

I just saw it when browsing Telkom. Go to a Telkom shop and find out more, or get a brochure ;)

Diginet lines for instance don't have the best reputation for "sharing" the connection, generally when a transfer takes place the line is utilized to it's max.

You could also take a look at a few places who "combine" two normal ADSL lines to make one fast line. I read somewhere that someone had 4 4mbps lines configured this way.

It was a news article on the forum to be honest, I'll check for it now ;)

I can setup a linux box to route 4mbps lines together, but i would need 20 lines just to provide 2mbps internet to 40 offices :(

I'm not sure where your office block is but maybe try calling MTNNS, I think they were laying fibre in Sandton.

I know its Megabits/s. ;) By SA standards that's still fast though and it'll still cost you a fortune.

140 megabits = 17.5 megabytes
17.5 megabytes / 40 means that each office will get 448KB/s

That could actually work, but it wont if the DIS price for 140mbps is too expensive.

Internet usage is genrally random and burst-y in nature. "Softer" sharing means you'll prob get more

Has anyone got more info or rough pricing on telkom's DIS?

I just went to a Telkom shop and they had no idea what i was talking about :P

So after i explained what the DIS is, they told me to phone Telkom business.

That's Telscum for you, sorry bro, I gave the beast more credit than it deserved, thought they would at least know their own packages, :p

Yup yup, I'm gonna phone telkom business tomorrow and see if they know anything...

Was just hoping someone here knew something about it

Hello All

I ran test a few months ago. similar to this.

You need:
1x Edimax 4 WAN + 1 LAN port Load Balancer (From Miro)
4x Edimax ADSL LAN Routers (From Miro)
4x Telkom 4Mbps ADSL Lines (R416 p/m Each = R1664)
4x IS 100GB 4Mbps accounts (R5130 p/m Each = R20 520)

Total Cost R22 184
Total Bandwidth 16Mbps = 2.3MB /s = 2285KB/s (downlink)
Total Bandwidth 1.5Mbps = 214KB/s (uplink)
Total Data 400GB (which can be used up in 50 Hours)

Now use a MikroTik Box to allow PPPoE Connection. (for capping & bandwidth limiting)

Run a network throughout the building. then use a broadband router to establish a PPPoE connection to your MikroTik on the clients side. (almost the same to ADSL But on LAN/WLAN)

you can plug Load Balancers into each other if you need more bandwidth. But i would have a Microsoft ISA server between the load balancer - MikroTik to proxy common Files, Updates, etc.
