Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me. I applied for a 1024Kbs a while back and when they installed it, my line was rather decent and I was getting speeds between 0.85 and 0.95mbs according to speedtest.net

Telkom came out to fix an issue with noise on the voice line and since then, they had to drop my DSL speed to 512kbs to get my DSL sync. Now I tried calling Telkom to fix the issue, but they dont think its an issue.

Any ideas on how I can move forward? 512kbs is just to painful!

P.S. I'd really like 4mbps, but I'm limited to 1024. Anyway I could request it from Telkom?

If the copper line wont support higher speeds not much can be done .Do you know how far you are from your exchange ??

Between 500m and a 1km. It's pretty much next door to me. So you're saying I'm stuck with 512?

Log in on your ADSL modem and then go and search for your ADSL statistics and post it here.
We're basically just interested in the speed, SNR/noise margin and line attenuation values - both upstream & downstream.

If you're 1km or less away from the DSLAM/Exchange, then your downstream line attenuation should be below 20dB and then you should easily be able to get up to 8Mbps if the Exchange supports it.

Upstream: 256000
Downstream: 512000

SNR Margin(Upstream): 20 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream): 42.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream): 9.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream): 18.0 dB

Other than the upstream SNR, the rest seems really good..

Yup. Your stats are all good - so now it all depends on the speeds that the Exchange can offer you.

Is it possible that my DSL router could also be a problem? Its a pretty old router. How can I find out what speeds my exchange offers or is it pretty much what telkom's dsl checker says?

The DSL speed check site can be inaccurate.

Even if your ADSL modem only supports G.DMT modulation and not ADSL2+ modulation, then it should at least give you up to 8Mbps support.

Did they say they put you on a new card or changed your card to fix your problem? cause thats what caused me to be stuck on 512kb while they were trying to find a replacement card for my old card which expired, since the new card already in box wasnt correct one for my line :D

Luckily they found an identical card to my old one for me quite quick only took them an hour to find one so maybe a long shot, but may help.

Are you connecting now with adsl 2+ since they fixed it or are you still on g.dmt or were you always on adsl2+ if the latter you were always on the new cards so my idea won't help you.

I'm connected using g.dmt

oh ok so its something else then unless they changed your card with wrong old one to fix it :D

Did you try phoning Telkom to see what speed you on their side? They said I was 4 megs when I was on 512kb by mistake

Thanks guys. The last three times I called Telkom they weren't able to help me with my line speed and said there was nothing they could do for me. Tonight I called them again, and the lady that abswered set it back to 1mb for me and just reset the port. So now it works!!! Yeahness!!!

My exchange has only been upgraded to 1mb, but she gave me a number to call to see if they can upgrade me to 4mb or higher!

Great so was only a profile problem :D the technician probably changed it for some reason during the last visit

Technicians irritate me... They did that to me once, no warning that their 'solution' was to downgrade my profile.
They irritate me aswell they took my dsl speed down from 4mb to 2mb without even telling me.I had to phone them to find that out.Apperently thats the reason why my dsl is so unstable during night because my exchange can't handle a 4mb.The only thing i don't understand is when I applied for a 4mb line they did tests to see if my exchange can handle it.
And it was doing fine at 4mb at first just one day out of nowhere it's started dropping now all of a sudden my exchange can't handle 4mb? WTF:wtf:

Its probably caused by congestion when they get too many customers using their lines at the same time and not many probably had lines until you got congestion from a boom of new customers.
