My parents have telkom adsl at home... we have a useless little telkom router, and the previous time I was at home, I couldn't get connected to the wireless network at all. I have a macbook pro, and a while back I got connected to the network, but the last time I couldn't... each time I enter the wap-key, it gives me an error and doesn't allow me to access the internet...

my question is, is it worth the money to just buy a new router? will that resolve the problem? what is the best router for the job?
or is there anyone that had the same problem? I cannot give you any more details about problems connecting because I am not at home now... still busy with exam, and want to buy a router here before I leave for home

You can try changing the encryption and channel number on the router. Try to use channel, 6, 9, 11 or, 13 and see if it makes a difference ;)

The best thing to do is probably to remove all security on it just so you can test it then once you get a connection that works you can add keys etc. again.

The problem is just if all that doesn't work... then I am stuck in Knysna, and where can I buy a new router... can order one online i guess...

I have sent half a dozen clients back to the telkom shop in the past month or so with their routers in hand to get them replaced - 3 because the wireless didn't work. As long as you bring everything back including the original box they will replace it no questions asked - they know they're rubbish. That's in Knysna too (Woodmill Lane).
