Favourite coffee

View attachment 907474

This just arrived from Takealot. So far the Sprada is the oldest - expiry date Nov 2020. The Strictly Coffee is between the two and the KayRin has a manufacture date of August. It's the only one with manufacture date on the packet so you can see when your beans were roasted (important if you're fussy).
Tell us what you thought of kayrin and strictly. My new Pierre lotti order arrived today after having used them back in March.

So I am looking for some advice.
Currently I am using a Saeco Pico Baristo for my morning coffee.
I bought this for a small office initially, but since the start of lock down it has been at home.
Good for convenience and to grab a cup between meetings.

I have one of these (mainly because it was 40% off on eBucks)

I have a very cheap burr grinder (melita I think) it doesn't really work that well.
Thinking of getting rid of the bean to cup and perhaps spend a bit more on a grinder.
I see that smeg now has one for +/- R5k which would work well for the counter top but not really sure about functionality.

I have been reading here and the advice is to check gumtree. I don't know too much about grinders, here is something I have seen in coffee shops for a similar price:

Thing is I am not sure about maintenance, etc. Something like this will also most likely not be packed away, I will use it daily. Happy to learn, in fact I need to. Which would be the best way to go for a decent grinder?

It depends on what you want to brew. If it's espresso, then I would recommend getting whatever you can afford that has the best resale value. Most likely something used. You will use it to learn for a year or two (you mentioned that you need to learn), then you will eventually upgrade. Espresso brewing is not forgiving at all, and it is best to just learn for yourself. As soon as you are satisfied with what you are tasting, then mission accomplished! For me, satisfaction was achieved in my 3rd grinder 4 years later, a Niche Zero. Managed to sell the first two thankfully (a Graeff and the awesome Breville BES 870). This is not the peace-of-mind alternative (might cost some extra cash and plenty of forum-reading time) but you will learn.

If you are not brewing proper espressos, then get something that will give you peace of mind (probably something new and with a warranty). The Smeg machine that you linked to is not a high-end espresso machine. Machines like that generally have a pressurised portafilters and basic temperature control (which is perfect to start with, but limited). It would be overkill to pair a top-of-the-range grinder with that machine. In this case, the grinder you linked to will be fine. Even the Graeff that I had as my first grinder would do.

Just depends on how deep you want to dive into coffee. =)

So my POS Melitta grinder just ground to a halt this morning:mad:
All of a sudden everything electric is at ridiculous prices again. Will have to see perhaps get a good manual grinder
Grr....

My kinu has served me well and no doubt will continue to do so long into the future

I can highly recommend the M47 as a manual grinder

If you look at olx etc you can snag a deal I bought this about 3 years ago for R2k the person was using it as their decaf grinder and barely used it. Built like a tank and I use it for my beer malt grain grinding as well :)

This is not criticism because I too love my coffee, and have a Delonghi bean-to-cup machine I use every day, but have we not lost the plot somewhat? R12k for a grinder?

My daughter started cold brewing coffee and I must confess I love it, but it made me think, are we not taking this whole search for the ultimate coffee experience just a little bit too far?

Its like that with most things, to get 70% of the quality is normally fairly cheap. Getting that last 30% though is where it gets expensive.
Coffee is still relatively cheap, try shaving a few grams off a bicycle if you really want to see things get expensive!!

No idea. I am totally electronic/electric repair impaired!

You can call the stockists, if you get no luck then find an independent household appliance repairer (vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, etc.) and ask them to have a go. Most of these types of repairs are extremely simple and require a generic process of deduction to diagnose.

Not at all I snagged my espresso machine for R2.5k worth 15k

So my setup is worth R27k and I paid R4.5k

I would never pay that for the grinder I searched olx for months for a deal like that

Cold brew is so easy to make though. Wouldn't call it going too far.

Sad to say, but I've seen a lot of ads for auctions for restaurants that have closed down. You can probably snag a pro setup for dirt cheap if you are into that sort of thing.

Agreed, these were however the suppliers last stock and wanted to get rid of it

I went through the same a year or so ago - upgrading from 15 years of Saeco and Jura superautos.

The Baratza Sette 270wi was where I landed - brilliant bit of kit and should last you for life if looked after.
