I have bad news for you OP. Even if you double your salary you'll feel the same.
Find your validation inside, not outside.

Hi.

I seem to be experiencing some depression the last couple of months regarding my career or more importantly my income vs. my age status. I am a system admin at a mining company, am 32 years old and earn a gross monthly salary of R32000. The majority of my friends, all in different industries, earn more (and some much more) than me and they are either my age or younger.

This makes me doubt my future and career choice and I am feeling as if though I am a failure. I was wondering (hoping) whether there are some of you who have also experienced these thoughts / emotions and how you dealt with it. I know I should not compare myself to others but it is frustrating to see them being able to afford a house, children, new cars etc. and I am battling to make ends meet.

Any advice will be appreciated and I apologize for the depressing topic.

Firstly, as others have said, you're not actually that badly off if you look outside your immediate circle. The way I see it, you have two choices, you either accept it, or you find a way to better yourself. I don't know where you stand relative to other sys admins (my guess would be a little above average), but you should consider what alternatives will give you the progression you want and act on one of them (e.g., studying, moving into software dev, DB admin, etc.). There are ways to take control of your life - the biggest step is usually recognizing that it is fundamentally your own choice.

You guys have no idea of OP's hardships. Having to show up at functions in last season's Armani suit :crying:

I once had to go to a function and couldn't get a helicopter. Most depressing night of my life even the honeyz didn't want to chat to me.

Come on guys, it may be that the person is depressed for other reasons and simply under the erroneous impression that his salary is a major cause.

His error is thinking that coming to MyBB is the way to solve any kind of depression, especially considering he is crying about earning R32k.

Become a man. Acknowledge who and why you are. Take control of your own aspirations. If you believe money equates happiness, you will remain eternally unhappy. If your friends measure your worth by your possessions - lose them. Engage only in that which makes you content. Good luck. Should unhappiness befall you, re-read from point one. R32k ain't the problem mate.

So after deductions that should be about R24? You prolly have a lot of loans and unnecessary expenses that's eating into that. Time to reevaluate.

That was not my intention as I am well aware that others are worse off than I am. My problem is not with my salary per se but my salary at my age you must have misunderstood.

There's nothing wrong with your salary at your age.
