Holla everyone!

In the last few weeks I noticed that Dark Fibre Africa has finally started fibre backbone rollout in Stellenbosch very close to where I stay. I since investigated the network map on their website and found the new rollout being marked as "planned". The cables are not going directly past our flat block, but it is going to about 75 metres up and down the street.

See the network map here with our flat block indicated by the arrow:

Now I am wondering how close does fibre backbone need to be to our premises in order to arrange a connection, or does it have to be installed all the way to the FTTHome itself? I.e. does DFA do the core backbone installation and then installation into you premises is arranged with one of the fibre providing ISPs, or does DFA probably already have arrangements with clients on the planned routes for direct installation into their premises?

I am hoping it is the former so that I can have me some fibre connection in the months to come! :D

Good luck i have had DFA out side my residence for about 2 years and is live, i stay in a 41 unit complex and the providers couldnt care. minimum of 150 units is the lowest i have found so far even though i currently have about 80% buy in from my complex only people who havnt said yes are the ou toppies who believe PCs are the devils works and communicate via morse code over their telegram line lol :)

As an example, on one street, we reticulated the backbone in a 16 unit complex, and 26 Unit Complex, one free standing house, and will commencing the final 17 Unit complex in the next couple of weeks.

Maybe you want to PM me the details of your complex and I can look into it for you?

Dang, thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to be happy with ADSL for the foreseeable future :O

So to make it clearer does the DFA backbone need to go past a residence/complex in order for companies like yours to do the reticulation? Or what kind of distance does "reticulation of the backbone" allow?

In general, the distance from the DFA HH is taken into account when we do a feasibility study.

However in example I used we in fact trenched nearly 2-3km to get to these complexes.

So we do look at each complex on an individual basis.
